He questioned whether filming helped the team, but his comments are his assessment—not evidence that the Netflix series caused Sunderland’s results.
What Honeyman said about the documentary
In an interview published by FourFourTwo on April 7, 2021, Honeyman compared his experience of filming Sunderland ’Til I Die to the reality show Big Brother. He said: “It was a bit like being in Big Brother,” adding, “you never feel that comfortable about being taped 24/7, so that was a bit of an issue for us as players.”
His comparison was about the feeling of being recorded constantly, not a claim that the documentary and reality show had identical formats. Honeyman described the cameras as a source of discomfort for players.
Why season one felt more intense
Honeyman said the first season involved GoPro cameras around the club building and more interviews. The volume and presence of filming made it feel unusual compared with the second season, when he encountered more familiar media duties, such as a short interview after training. That detail is the publication’s reporting; the feature does not amount to an independent examination of the players’ contracts. Did Honeyman think the cameras affected Sunderland’s results?
Honeyman questioned whether the filming helped the team on the pitch. In contemporaneous comments reported by Sky Sports, he said constant cameras were unwelcome when things were going badly and suggested the exposure was not conducive to a good working environment. He also recognized the documentary’s positive exposure for Sunderland and its supporters, saying: “I think everyone appreciates how the Sunderland fans live it and how it affects their day-to-day lives.”

Those remarks establish Honeyman’s view of the pressure and publicity. They do not establish that cameras caused poor performances, relegation, or any particular result. The available reporting does not isolate a documentary effect from the many other factors that shape a football season.
