The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a six-part television drama based on Heather Morris’s novel, inspired by the story of Holocaust survivors Lali and Gita Sokolov. It premiered on May 2, 2024. Its official launch announcement listed different streaming partners by territory; current availability should be checked on the relevant platform.
What is The Tattooist of Auschwitz about?
The series adapts Heather Morris’s novel, which is inspired by the real-life story of Lali and Gita Sokolov. In the series’ official premise, Slovakian Jew Lali is deported to Auschwitz in 1942 and forced to tattoo identifying numbers on fellow prisoners. The story also follows the later-life frame in which Lali recounts his experiences to Morris.
That framing matters: the television series is a dramatization based on a novel, not a documentary. Its official description supports calling it “inspired by” the Sokolovs’ story; it does not establish that every scene or detail is verified historical fact. Sky’s series page describes it as a six-part series based on Morris’s novel and inspired by the real-life story of Lali and Gita Sokolov.
How does the novel connect to the series?
Morris has said that she first met Lali in 2003 and became his friend over the following three years. She initially drafted his story as a screenplay, then turned it into a novel; the television series adapts that book. Morris discusses the process in an interview with Sky.
#1 Best Overall
The novel is the direct source for the series and a natural companion for viewers who want to explore the story in book form. It should not be presented as a history textbook or as a substitute for historical scholarship.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the series a documentary or a fully verified account?
No: it is a television drama based on Morris’s novel and inspired by Lali and Gita Sokolov’s story. That description distinguishes the real people who inspired the work from the series’ dramatized scenes. The official series pages do not establish that every scene is documentary fact.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum’s Memoria publication includes discussion of historical-accuracy issues connected to the novel. That is a reason to keep the distinction between inspiration and verification clear, not a comprehensive verdict on the television adaptation. Readers seeking historical context should consult authoritative Holocaust-history and museum sources directly.
