Veere Di Wedding is worth watching if you want a loud, irreverent female buddy comedy and can tolerate a loose story. Critics broadly agreed that its screenplay is weak, but several also agreed that its best comic set pieces and lines land. The film is a fiction feature, not a documentary, and this review judges it on those terms.
What the film is
Veere Di Wedding is a 2018 Hindi ensemble comedy directed by Shashanka Ghosh. It follows four women friends around a wedding, and the story moves between their romantic lives, their friendships and the family pressures that surround them. Scroll’s review identifies Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri as the screenwriters and describes the setting as an ultra-rich Delhi milieu.

Who is in it and who made it
- Director: Shashanka Ghosh
- Screenwriters: Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, as named in Scroll’s review
- Lead ensemble: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania
- Genre: Scroll describes it as a female buddy comedy; the film’s own certification listing names Ghosh and the principal cast
Most of the film’s energy comes from how these four performers play off each other, and that is where the critical discussion concentrates.
Where the film works: the comic set pieces
The strongest case for the film rests on its comedy rather than its plot. India Today’s review, published June 1, 2018, says that although the screenplay is poor, funny moments and witty lines carry the film. The Indian Express points to the affection with which the characters are written, and The National highlights the chemistry and warmth among the four leads. Those are the qualities that make the film watchable even when its structure drifts.

#1 Best Overall
The film’s humour is deliberately bold. Scroll’s critic Nandini Ramnath’s headline, “Rarely has a movie worked so hard at being outrageous,” reads as both a compliment and a warning: the jokes are aggressive, adult and often profane, and they are the film’s main selling point.
Where it falls short: the screenplay and the friendship at its centre
The criticism is aimed mostly at the writing. Ramnath argues that the film reaches only the shallow end of female friendship, writing that it “dives into the shallow end of the deep pool of female friendship.” In her reading, the film foregrounds irreverent, adult attitudes but does not dig far into what keeps the four women together or what strains them apart.
India Today’s criticism points the same way from a different angle. A film can carry a weak screenplay on the strength of its jokes, but when the jokes thin out, the lack of narrative drive becomes obvious. That is the core of the “all over the place” judgment: the film has no single tonal or structural line, so scenes that are sharp on their own do not add up to a story.
How the critics split
| Outlet | Date | Main emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll (Nandini Ramnath) | June 1, 2018 | Outrageous, adult humour; only the shallow end of female friendship |
| India Today | June 1, 2018 | Poor screenplay, but funny moments and witty lines carry the film |
| The Indian Express | Date not stated in the source notes | Affection with which the characters are written |
| The National | Date not stated in the source notes | Ensemble chemistry and warmth among the four leads |
The split is less about whether the film is funny and more about what a viewer should expect from comedy. Critics who valued the performers’ rapport were willing to forgive the writing; critics who wanted emotional or narrative depth were not.

The setting and who the film speaks to
The film is set in affluent Delhi, and that matters for how far its concerns about marriage, friendship and family travel. The characters’ problems belong to a privileged social world, so viewers outside that milieu may find the stakes less immediately recognisable, even when the jokes are universal. This is a critical judgment about the film’s scope rather than a measured audience result.
Certification and reported edits
The CBFC Watch listing, which presents certification records from the Central Board of Film Certification’s E-Cinepramaan data, reports Hindi-language UA certification dated May 23, 2018. It also lists certification edits, including blurring a vibrator, blurring liquor labels and modifying profanity. These are third-party records of what the board required, not a fresh examination of the film as released, so viewers should read them as a guide to the censor history rather than a complete content description.
Is it worth watching?
The answer depends on what you want from the evening:
- Watch it if you enjoy outrageous, profane ensemble comedy and want to see four lead performers working in close rapport.
- Watch it if you can accept that individual scenes and lines are funnier than the film as a whole.
- Skip it if you need a tight plot, a convincing account of female friendship or a consistent tone from start to finish.
- Be cautious if the affluent Delhi setting and its social assumptions would make the characters feel remote to you.
As a verdict, Veere Di Wedding is uneven and often shallow, but its best moments are genuinely bold, and the cast makes the most of them.
