TRON: Ares debuted with a 56% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score in release-weekend coverage, but the film did not crash out of the box office: it opened at No. 1. As of October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 52% from 272 critic reviews and 83% from more than 5,000 verified audience ratings. Those are different snapshots and different measures, so neither the headline’s “crashes and burns” nor the current score tells the whole story.
What is Tron: Ares’ Rotten Tomatoes score?
Rotten Tomatoes’ release-weekend report in October 2025 gave TRON: Ares an early Tomatometer score of 56%. The current film page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists 52% from 272 reviews and an 83% audience score from more than 5,000 verified ratings. Rotten Tomatoes scores can change as additional reviews and audience ratings are counted, so the 56% figure describes the debut snapshot, not the current listing. Rotten Tomatoes’ current film page and its October 2025 weekend report show those respective figures.

The audience score and Tomatometer are separate indicators: the former reflects verified audience ratings, while the latter reflects critics’ reviews. Disney UK said in a press release dated October 13, 2025, that the audience score then stood at 87%. That was a contemporaneous studio-reported figure, not the current 83% shown on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney UK’s release also reported a £1.78 million three-day opening in the UK and Ireland, a territory-specific result rather than global revenue.
Why did Tron: Ares get a low Rotten Tomatoes score?
The critical response was mixed, not uniformly negative. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed consensus describes the film as “A sensory feast of vivid neon hues and a hypnotic soundtrack” but says it is “too narratively programmatic to achieve an authentically human dimension.” In other words, the consensus recognizes the visual and musical spectacle while faulting the story’s emotional impact. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus captures that split.

- Get ready for the electrifying action and adventure of “Tron: Ares.” When a highly sophisticated Program named Ares is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, it marks humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
The Associated Press was more favorable, giving the film three stars out of four. That assessment shows why a score should not be read as a verdict that every critic disliked the movie: the score summarizes the proportion of positive reviews, while individual reviewers can have more nuanced responses. The AP review lists the film’s runtime as 119 minutes and its rating as PG-13 for violence and action.
Did the film’s opening weekend really crash?
TRON: Ares led the domestic box office on its opening weekend, but its reported opening was below expectations. The Associated Press, citing Comscore’s Sunday estimate in 2025, put the domestic opening at $33.5 million. Rotten Tomatoes’ weekend report rounded the opening to $35 million. These are not identical figures: one is the AP-reported Comscore estimate and the other is a rounded figure in Rotten Tomatoes’ contemporaneous coverage.

The AP described the reported production cost as around $150 million. That is an attributed approximate cost, not a studio-confirmed budget figure in the cited report. The weekend result supports calling the debut disappointing relative to expectations, but it does not establish whether the film was profitable: opening-weekend box office is not the same as distributor receipts or the full economics of a release. The AP box-office report quotes Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “It’s been tough for that franchise to gain traction for it to become a big mega franchise.” The same report notes, “It still topped the box office.”
