John Keaton’s return in Tracker shows why he could work as more than an occasional ally for Colter Shaw: the two have an established friendship, and their partnership gives the case a welcome second dimension. But Keaton is not currently established as a series regular. The title is an argument for a larger role, not news of a casting change.
Why Keaton’s return works
In “Good Trouble,” Season 3, Episode 9, Colter’s old friend Keaton asks him to help find Keaton’s former partner. CBS’s episode guide, which dates the episode December 14, 2025, says the search leads the pair to a trail of bodies and a deeper conspiracy. CBS’s Season 3 episode guide
The premise makes their history matter to the investigation. Colter is not simply taking a lead from a new client; he is helping someone he knows, while the case draws the pair into danger together. A review of “Good Trouble” describes the friendship and banter between Keaton and Colter as a highlight. That rapport gives Keaton a distinct story function: he can challenge Colter as a trusted partner rather than appear only as another person seeking help. Tell-Tale TV’s review of “Good Trouble”
What Keaton adds to Colter’s stories
A relationship with history
Keaton is Colter’s old friend, so their scenes can rely on familiarity instead of spending time establishing a new connection. The review’s praise of their dynamic suggests that this history translates into an engaging on-screen partnership.
#1 Best Overall
A different kind of case partner
Colter’s work centers on tracking down missing people and solving dangerous cases. Keaton’s return puts a former partner of his own at the heart of the search, giving the story a personal connection for both men. That setup can broaden an episode’s emotional stakes without changing the basic shape of Colter’s investigations.
A recurring contrast, if the show chooses to use it
A series-regular role could make Keaton a continuing presence in Colter’s life and create room for more stories built around their shared past. That is the appeal of the proposal, not evidence that the series has committed to that direction. The available episode descriptions and review do not establish how a continuing role would affect the show’s plans.

Is Keaton a series regular on Tracker?
No. The Tell-Tale TV review explicitly says Keaton is not a series regular. CBS billed Brent Sexton as a guest star for “The Disciple,” Season 2, Episode 9, in which a new lead in Colter’s missing-person case brings him together again with retired cop Keaton. CBS’s page for “The Disciple”
The sources establish guest and returning appearances, but do not establish an official CBS announcement promoting Keaton or a future commitment to regular appearances. It is therefore accurate to say he could merit a larger role; it would not be accurate to present that change as confirmed.
