The 2024 film ends with Tally choosing to undergo the Pretty operation as part of a plan to help the Smokies, then shows a visual sign that she may still be connected to her former self. Director McG has said he hopes the ending leads to more films, but that is not a Netflix greenlight.
What happens at the end of Uglies?
Tally Youngblood grows up in a city where turning 16 means undergoing a cosmetic operation to become Pretty. She discovers the procedure also changes people’s minds. Dr. Cable coerces Tally into infiltrating the Smokies, the community resisting the city’s system, to find Shay. Tally’s tracking necklace leads Cable’s forces to the Smokies, who are captured; Shay is forced into the operation.
Tally then offers to undergo the operation herself so David, Maddy, and Az can use her as a test subject for their cure. David warns that the procedure may leave her unable to consent afterward. Tally promises to leave a sign that she is still herself, turns herself in, and says: “I’m Tally Youngblood. Make me Pretty.” Netflix’s Tudum and TheWrap describe the ending and its context.
What does the palm scar mean?
The film’s final glimpse of Pretty Tally shows that the scar on her palm is still there. The scar is associated with Peris and is the sign Tally promised to leave. It links her to her past and leaves open the possibility that she can resist the procedure’s effects. It does not prove that the cure has worked, or that a sequel is in production.

Why does Tally choose to become Pretty?
She is trying to repair the harm she caused
Tally’s spying helped expose the Smokies and led to their capture. By volunteering, she puts herself at risk to give them another chance to act and to test their cure. Director McG described her choice as an “ultimate sacrifice” made as a ruse to help the Smokies liberate people or at least give them a choice, in Netflix Tudum’s account.
Her goal is choice, not the city’s ideal
Tally’s decision is strategic rather than an endorsement of the system that forces people into the operation. The larger conflict is about autonomy: she hopes the Smokies can challenge a society that denies people meaningful choice and offer people the chance to decide for themselves.

Is the ending different from the book?
The film extends the first novel’s ending by showing Pretty Tally and her palm scar. That added image makes the continuation hook more explicit on screen. The first book reaches its closing line without this same final visual glimpse, as discussed in TheWrap’s ending analysis.
Will there be an Uglies 2 on Netflix?
There is no confirmed Netflix sequel as of October 8, 2026. Sky’s March 2026 page said no sequel plans had been confirmed at that time. Netflix’s official Uglies catalog page lists the 2024 film; a catalog listing on its own cannot establish that a sequel has been canceled or ruled out.

McG has expressed hope for follow-up films. In a 2024 interview with TheWrap, he said he hoped the ending’s final line would propel “the second and third films.” That is the director’s ambition, not an announcement that Netflix has ordered them. The ending sets up another story, but a story hook is not a production confirmation.

Netflix identifies the film as based on Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies novel and says Westerfeld served as an executive producer. Readers who want the source story can start with Uglies; the book series continues with Pretties and Specials. Those books continue the story on the page, but their existence does not confirm that Netflix will adapt them.
