‘Tumbbad’ is a Hindi folk-horror film first released in 2018, and it remains one of the more distinctive Indian genre films of its era. Sohum Shah plays Vinayak Rao, a man whose hunger for a hidden family treasure grows into something slow, eerie and destructive. Reviewers have praised its atmosphere and visual world, while several have found its mythology dense enough to test a viewer’s patience. The film rewards attention, but it asks for it.

What the film is about

At its core, ‘Tumbbad’ is a moral fable disguised as a monster story. The supernatural premise gives physical shape to a very human weakness: the wish to possess and control wealth, and the willingness to pay any price to get it. The film’s central frame is greed, and it treats the pursuit of riches as something that becomes compulsive and dangerous rather than merely ambitious.

Story setup, without the major turns

The story begins small. Vinayak’s search starts with a few gold coins, and over decades it becomes an escalating obsession. The setting is a decaying village, and the plot draws on family history and a cursed ancestral figure. Beneath it all lies a treasure guarded by an evil fallen god. Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis of the film describes this same arc of a small find that snowballs into a lifelong pursuit, and the film’s period texture and rural decay do much of the work of making that trajectory feel inevitable.

Hastar and the mythology

The conflict with Hastar, the mythic figure associated with the treasure, is the engine of the film’s supernatural side. Hastar is not a conventional monster to be defeated in a single confrontation; he is part of a larger mythic system that the film expects viewers to accept on its own terms. That is where the film divides audiences. Its folklore is rich and carefully textured, but it is also layered and not always spelled out. Viewers who want a clean explanation of every rule may find the second half harder to follow than the first.

Horror of threat, atmosphere and behaviour

The film’s scares come less from jump moments than from mood. Much of the unease comes from the sense that the landscape itself is hostile and that the house, the village and the family line carry the weight of old bargains. India Today’s 2024 feature describes the film as a distinctive blend of folk, fantasy and horror, and reads its most fearsome imagery as a commentary on greed and on shortcuts to wealth. That reading is useful for a current viewer: the horror is less about what jumps out and more about what a character is willing to become.

Cast and credits

Sohum Shah plays Vinayak Rao and is also credited as a producer. Rahi Anil Barve is identified as the director. Listings differ in how they describe Anand Gandhi’s creative role on the film, so if you need the exact wording for a citation or credit line, check the credits on the specific platform or database you use rather than relying on a single summary.

How critics have read it

Scroll.in’s 2018 review focused on the film’s dense mythology and on the way it asks viewers to connect myth with reality. The same review reads the supernatural conflict against the protagonist’s feudal power and misogyny, treating the monster story as a commentary on social privilege as well as on personal greed. This is one critic’s perspective rather than a settled account of what the film means, and other viewers may weigh the mythology and the social reading differently.

Where the film works and where it strains

  • Strengths reviewers cite: an eerie, carefully built atmosphere; a visual world that feels specific rather than generic; and a central character whose decline carries real weight.
  • Complaints reviewers raise: a mythology that is dense and puzzle-like, especially for viewers unfamiliar with the folklore, and a narrative that can feel more concerned with its lore than with explaining it.
  • Interpretive debate: whether the film’s greed theme is its main point or whether its social reading, around feudal power and misogyny, is equally central.

Who it suits

  • Viewers who enjoy folk horror and mythology-driven fantasy.
  • Those who prefer mood and dread over relentless action or jump scares.
  • Readers interested in Indian genre cinema that draws on regional folklore rather than imported horror conventions.

Viewers who need every supernatural rule explained may find the film frustrating, and those expecting a conventional horror thriller may find its pace slow.

Verdict

‘Tumbbad’ is an absorbing, unsettling film that uses a mythic premise to examine greed with real patience. Critics praise its atmosphere and visual design, and they are right to. Its mythology is the trade-off: it gives the film its depth and also its occasional opacity. For viewers willing to meet it halfway, it is one of the more memorable folk-horror films to come out of Indian cinema.
