Executive producer and writer Mike Price said he could not imagine the show really killing him off, calling it “the end of everything.” It was a hypothetical comment—not a plot twist in the series’ 800th episode.
Which character did Mike Price mean?
Price was talking about Santa’s Little Helper, the greyhound who has been part of the Simpsons family since the series began. In a February 16, 2026 interview reported by ComingSoon, Price said there was never a version of the story, as he saw it, in which the dog really died. He added: “It’s one thing to kill off Larry the Barfly, but if you kill off Santa’s Little Helper, that will be the end of everything.”

Price’s remark describes how central the dog feels to the show; it does not announce an upcoming death or say that Santa’s Little Helper dies on screen.
Did Santa’s Little Helper die in episode 800?
No. The milestone episode is “Irrational Treasure,” Season 37, Episode 14. Disney+ identifies it as the series’ 800th episode, and its listed premise is that Marge tries to get Santa’s Little Helper healthy and enters him in a national dog show. The Disney+ catalog lists the series and episode.

Price’s comments were made in connection with the 800-episode milestone, but his answer was that the dog was not going to be killed off. TheWrap also identified “Irrational Treasure” as episode 800 ahead of its Sunday broadcast in its February 13, 2026 coverage: TheWrap.
Why does the dog’s fate carry so much weight?
The show’s flexible continuity helps explain the distinction between a dramatic idea and a permanent change. In the same February 13, 2026 interview with TheWrap, showrunner Matt Selman described the characters as resetting each week: “It’s like Groundhog Day but they don’t know it — and they don’t die that much.” He said a few developments have stuck, while most deaths and job changes remain fluid.

- They've kept television viewers laughing for nearly 20 years, and now the most popular animated family on the small screen makes the leap into theaters as Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, ad Maggie embark on their first-ever feature-length adventure. Directed by David Silverman and written by a whole host of Simpsons veterans including Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, The Simpsons Movie also features s
That approach means an episode can explore a possible future or an unusual situation without establishing a lasting change to the family’s everyday status quo. Price’s comment is about the emotional significance of Santa’s Little Helper within that status quo, not a claim that every death in the series is impossible.
How this differs from Marge’s future-set death
Price’s remark is also separate from the future-set Season 36 finale that depicted a possible future in which Marge was dead. Selman told Variety that the scenario was speculative, not a permanent death in the show’s continuity. He said: “‘The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!” and explained that Marge was dead only in that future episode, not as a continuing fact in the show.

The distinction is between a story imagining a future and a character being permanently removed from the show’s ongoing family setup. Selman’s comments do not turn the future episode into a permanent main-timeline change.
What the show has said about its ending
Selman has also described the series as unlikely to use a conventional finale. In the February 13, 2026 interview with TheWrap, he said the show had already made an episode parodying finale ideas as a way of signaling that it was not planning a traditional series finale. If the series ever did end, he said, he imagined a regular family episode rather than a farewell built around “I’m going to miss this place.”

That outlook fits the weekly-reset format: the show can reach a major episode count without treating the milestone as a final chapter for its characters.
