Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie is a four-episode docuseries that presents Papini’s own account of her 2016 disappearance and what followed. The series is her perspective, not an independent finding. The government record is separate: Papini pleaded guilty to mail fraud and to making false statements, and federal prosecutors state that the kidnapping she reported never happened. The five points below separate what the series presents from what the official record establishes.
Where the series is available and how it is structured
Hulu lists Caught in the Lie as one season of four episodes, rated TV-14. ABC announced that a 20/20 preview of the Discovery ID documentary aired on May 23, 2025, and that the series streamed on Hulu the following day. Apple TV lists the same four episodes under these titles:

The Apple TV summaries describe an interview with Papini, her disappearance, her time in prison and her post-release life, and a polygraph sequence. These are platform synopses. They tell you what the series covers, not whether each assertion in it has been independently verified. Streaming catalogs change over time and differ by country, so check Hulu directly before watching.
1. The disappearance became a large public search
The U.S. Department of Justice says Papini was reported missing on November 2, 2016. She reappeared 22 days later, on November 24, and initially told investigators that two Hispanic women had abducted her at gunpoint. According to the DOJ’s March 2022 arrest announcement, law enforcement focused its work on that account and looked for women who matched her description.

That detail matters for understanding the scale of the case. The search was built around a specific claim about a specific kind of suspect, so the eventual finding that no abduction occurred affected more than one person’s account.
2. Investigators established that the kidnapping was fabricated
The DOJ’s sentencing announcement says DNA, cellphone and rental-car evidence showed that Papini had voluntarily stayed with a former boyfriend and had harmed herself to support her false statements. The DOJ also says she continued to repeat the kidnapping account after investigators presented that evidence in August 2020.

U.S. Attorney Talbert put the consequences this way in the DOJ’s March 3, 2022 arrest announcement: “Ultimately, the investigation revealed that there was no kidnapping and that time and resources that could have been used to investigate actual crime, protect the community, and provide resources to victims were wasted based on the defendant’s conduct.”
3. The false account had financial consequences
The DOJ arrest announcement says victim-assistance requests made from 2017 through 2021 resulted in approximately 35 payments totaling more than $30,000. Those figures are the DOJ’s own; they are not an independent audit of every payment.

The later sentencing announcement adds that Papini made false statements to the California Victim Compensation Board and to the Social Security Administration. Those statements are part of the government’s case, separate from the kidnapping claim itself.
4. The legal outcome is settled
On April 18, 2022, Papini pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud and one count of making false statements. On September 19, 2022, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $309,902 in restitution.

The March 2022 arrest announcement described charges and allegations at that stage of the case. The guilty pleas and the September 2022 sentence are the current legal status and should be treated as the outcome.

ABC’s May 2025 announcement says Papini speaks out in the series and offers a new version of events. Hulu describes the program as presenting her side of the story. Statements she makes on screen are her account, and they should be attributed to her or to the series as a presentation.

A useful way to watch is to keep two questions apart. The first is what Papini and the producers say happened. The second is what investigators and prosecutors established, including the guilty pleas and sentence. The series can add context and emotion to the second question, but it does not change the plea record.
