How does the 2023 film relate to the novel, Broadway musical and 1985 movie?
The 2023 film’s direct source is the Broadway musical. That stage musical is based on Alice Walker’s novel. The 1985 Steven Spielberg film is an earlier screen adaptation of the same story, not the version covered in this cast guide. Warner Bros. describes the 2023 movie as a new take on the classic, while the AFI Catalog identifies its musical lineage. Warner Bros. film page · AFI Catalog entry
The differences most relevant to a cast guide are the format and performers: the 2023 production is a musical film, and Barrino and Brooks bring their stage roles into it. It also uses musical numbers as part of the storytelling, rather than presenting the story only as a conventional drama. These distinctions describe the versions’ approaches; they do not establish that one is better than another.

What is distinctive about the film’s musical approach?
Bazawule described a musical palette drawing on gospel, blues and jazz, with sequences shaped around Celie’s imagination. His stated aim was to portray a woman imagining her way through pain and trauma, rather than depicting her as docile, passive or waiting to be rescued. The approach puts Celie’s inner life at the center of the film’s music. Associated Press interview and coverage
