Yes. The 2024 Blumhouse remake replaces the Danish original’s devastating ending with a violent fight in which the Dalton family survives. Both films build dread from social pressure and ignored warning signs, but the remake gives its victims a chance to resist.
How does the 2022 original end?
In Christian Tafdrup’s 2022 Danish film, the visiting family discovers too late that their hosts have been targeting families, using a stolen child to help lure new victims. After the guests try to escape, the hosts catch up with them. The parents are forced to watch as their daughter’s tongue is cut out, then they are stoned to death.
When Bjørn asks why, Patrick replies, “Because you let me.” TIME describes the line as a bleak summation of the film’s focus on passivity and politeness. It is the killer’s self-serving justification, not a fair judgment of the victims. The horror comes from the gap between the guests’ growing unease and their inability to act on it.
What changes in the 2024 remake’s ending?
James Watkins’s remake relocates the story to an American and British context. Ben and Louise Dalton and their daughter Agnes meet Paddy and Ciara Feld and their son Ant while on holiday, then accept an invitation to the hosts’ country home. The remake keeps the escalating boundary violations and social pressure, but changes the families and the outcome. TIME’s ending explanation and SYFY WIRE’s account describe the decisive change.

In the climax, Ant helps Agnes understand the danger, giving her time to alert her parents. The Daltons try to leave, then fight back. Louise and Agnes help defeat the attackers. Ben helps his family survive but does not kill the sedated Paddy; Ant kills him. The Daltons make it out alive, though the confrontation leaves them injured and traumatized.

Why did Blumhouse change the ending?
TIME reports that Watkins said he did not feel the need to make another “incredibly bleak movie.” He wanted to retain the satire and the exploration of social rules while making the film a tense ride that could also be fun. As he put it, “You can give people an incredibly tense roller coaster ride that has thematic nourishment and things to take away and talk about in the pub, but it can be fun.” TIME quoted Watkins from an interview with Total Film.

That is Watkins’s stated creative rationale. The available reporting does not establish that a studio mandate or audience research required a different ending.
What does the changed ending mean?
Both films make ordinary social encounters frightening by showing people explain away increasingly serious red flags. The original drives that tension to a cruel endpoint: the guests’ reluctance to break social rules leaves them powerless. The remake changes the final emphasis. Ant’s warning and the Daltons’ resistance turn the climax into a survival thriller as well as a story about social pressure.

The remake does not make the danger harmless or imply that every victim can escape by acting differently. Its ending offers the family agency and survival, while the original’s “Because you let me” remains the antagonist’s rationalization for violence—not proof that the victims were responsible for it.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced in September 2024 that the remake would arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on November 19, 2024, with bonus features including a James Watkins commentary. That announcement records the historical release plan; it does not confirm current stock or streaming availability. Streaming listings vary by territory and over time, so check current local services rather than relying on an old platform listing.
