Shree Thaarshini Sriraman’s review of Siddhartha Deb’s novel, published by Scroll.in on July 15, 2023, argues that the book tries to make nearly every plot detail carry a political, historical or social meaning. The result, in her reading, is a narrative so crowded with crises, genre shifts and explanation that it leaves too little room for character ambiguity and for the reader’s own interpretation. That is one critic’s judgment, not a consensus view of the book.
What the novel is, and which edition you are looking at
The Light at the End of the World is a novel, not nonfiction. Page counts depend on the edition, and the publisher’s listings give the following figures for the two formats it sells:
| Edition | Publication date (per publisher listing) | Page count (per publisher listing) |
|---|---|---|
| Ebook | May 30, 2023 | 458 pages |
| Paperback | May 7, 2024 | 456 pages |
These are the U.S. publisher’s figures for those specific editions. Other formats and markets may paginate differently, so check the edition in front of you before citing a page number. The review predates the paperback, so its references are to the novel as it stood in 2023.
The setup, as the publisher describes it
The publisher’s synopsis places a near-future Delhi plot around a character named Bibi and a cache of documents. Three historical strands run alongside it:

The synopsis ties political upheaval and historical memory to speculative elements, including an ancient aircraft, experimental weapons, automatons, spirits, spacecraft and aliens. That is the publisher’s own framing of the book. It is not an independently checked account of the history the novel draws on.
Sriraman’s review breaks the novel into four linked stories, “City of Brume,” “Claustropolis,” “Paranoir” and “The Line of Faith,” followed by a coda. She describes a movement backward across periods and frequent shifts among narrators, settings and genres. Readers expecting a single continuous thread should go in knowing that the book does not offer one.

The reviewer’s case: density that explains itself
The core of the review is about accumulation. Demonetisation, political violence, the Bhopal disaster, Partition-era conflict, colonial rebellion, myth, conspiracy, science fiction, horror and elaborately wrought prose all press into the narrative. Sriraman argues that these elements are repeatedly made to point toward one large political thesis.
Explanation in place of ambiguity
Her complaint is less that the book has many subjects than that it tells the reader what each of them means. Explanatory signposting, genre changes and a steady stream of crises, in her view, leave little space for the characters’ interior lives or for readers to reach their own conclusions. The density is treated as a cost to the people in the book as well as to the reader.

What the review credits
The review does not dismiss the novel. It acknowledges:
- Ambition in the scope of the project
- Commitment to detail
- Moments of unsettling uncertainty
- A late ending that opens more room for interpretation
Its objection, then, is to how the novel manages its ideas. The review’s own aside on the title “City of Brume” (it asks “Why brume?”) is the kind of question a reader may find the book answers before they get to ask it.

Is it science fiction?
Partly, and the sources do not support a single shelf label. An interview with Deb published by Public Books discusses the book’s use of speculative fiction, horror and the weird alongside political allegory. The Asian Review of Books describes the novel’s uncertainty and speculative qualities, including conspiracy, madness, marvels and the question of what counts as reality. The historical strands are equally real parts of the book.
Calling it straight science fiction leaves out the historical and political material; calling it historical fiction leaves out the speculative layer that runs through the synopsis and the interview. Sriraman does not object to the genre range itself. Her objection is to the way it is managed.

Where the reception diverges
The publisher presents the novel as a sweeping work connecting India’s nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the distant past and an apocalyptic future. That framing treats scale and genre range as the book’s selling points. The Scroll.in review reads the same scale as the source of its problem. Readers who come to the novel for scope will find the review’s objection useful as a warning; readers who come for ambiguity may find the publisher’s framing overstates how much room the book leaves them.
Who the book suits
The following four questions are drawn from the reviews and the synopsis. They are not the result of a reader survey, but they are the points where readers are most likely to differ:
- Are you comfortable with a nonlinear, multi-period structure?
- Do you want explicit political commentary, or would you rather draw it out yourself?
- Are you interested in speculative and weird genre crossings?
- Do you prefer ambiguity to explanatory narration?
A reader who answers yes to the first three but wants the last one is the reader for whom Sriraman’s objection will matter most.
