Rajmohan’s Wife is Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s English-language novel. It appeared serially in 1864 in the weekly Indian Field and is generally regarded as the first Indian novel in English. It is a domestic story built on a dangerous marriage and a suspenseful plot, which makes “true potboiler” a lively way into it. The phrase is an editorial judgment, though, not a settled critical verdict. The novel’s stranger story is how it survived: its opening chapters were missing from the surviving serial run and had to be reconstructed decades later.
What the novel is about
A 2021 edition description identifies Matangini as a woman married to Rajmohan, a violent husband, and notes her love for her sister’s husband. That premise carries the book’s central tension: a marriage that is dangerous, a desire that cannot be openly acted on, and a household that keeps the pressure building. The premise is a useful entry point, but it is a publisher’s summary. Judging the plotting, the pacing and the characters requires reading the novel itself.
Publication and recovery
The novel’s textual history is as unusual as its place in literary history. The account below comes from the preface to the 1935 edition, edited by R. Chatterjee and digitised at Wikisource.
- Serial publication, 1864. The story ran in the weekly Indian Field, edited by Kishori Chand Mitra.
- Found in bound volumes. The preface says files of the Indian Field were found bound together with issues of the Hindoo Patriot.
- Nearly complete, but not whole. According to the preface, nearly all installments were recovered, but the first three chapters were missing.
- A Bengali version. Bankim later began a Bengali version of the story. His nephew, Sachis Chandra Chatterjee, completed that version under the title Vari-Vahini.
- A bridged opening. The 1935 edition used an English rendering of the first three chapters of that Bengali text to supply the missing beginning. From chapter IV onward it reproduces Bankim’s own English.
The preface states this arrangement for the 1935 volume. Do not assume that every later printing follows the same editorial choice. Whether an edition marks the reconstructed opening, and how, is something to check in its front matter.

Why literary historians place it where they do
Supriya Chaudhuri’s chapter “Beginnings: Rajmohan’s Wife and the Novel in India,” published online by Cambridge University Press on 5 August 2015, describes the novel as generally regarded as the first Indian novel in English. - Original composition and translation. The book sits between writing directly in English and the translation and rendering of vernacular material.
- Realism and romance. Its domestic detail sits alongside the emotional excess of romance.
- Periodical and vernacular fiction. It was published in a weekly periodical, and it draws on the vernacular novel tradition.
- Modernity and tradition. It belongs to the moment when colonial-era Bengali readers were negotiating new literary forms.
This is an interpretive framework, not a unanimous ruling. “Generally regarded” is the phrase to keep in mind: the claim to firstness is the prevailing view, and it is stated as such.
Is it a “true potboiler”?
The title’s phrase works best as a question to test against the text rather than as a conclusion.

The case for the label
Serial publication shaped the book for a readership that came back each week. A domestic conflict with a violent husband, an illicit attachment and a suspenseful plot are the kinds of materials that keep installments moving. The novel is built to hold attention from one part to the next, and that is what “potboiler” describes at its best.
Where the label strains
- It is a judgment about intent and craft. Calling a novel a potboiler implies commercial aim and quick composition. Neither point is established by the sources available here.
- No scholarly consensus is documented. The phrase is not a direct quotation from a critic, and the critical framing available emphasises the novel’s historical position rather than its commercial mode.
- The text is partly reconstructed. Judging polish or pacing is harder when the opening comes from a different source than the rest. A reader should keep that in mind before deciding whether the book is slack or tightly plotted.
The fairest reading is that Rajmohan’s Wife is a serial novel with strong popular appeal, and that the label “true potboiler” is a provocation about how the book was made and read.

- For a paired reading: the 2021 volume is the option that brings a second Bengali-linked text into the same binding.

The novel is short enough to read in a single sitting, and its historical interest is best judged by reading the reconstructed opening alongside the rest.
