Virginia Woolf drafted The Life of Violet in 1907, when she was twenty-five: three interconnected comic stories about a giantess named Violet, a teasing portrait of her friend Mary Violet Dickinson. Woolf gave the work to Dickinson in August 1907 as a private tribute. It stayed largely out of view for more than a century. The version that matters most to scholars is a revised typescript that Urmila Seshagiri, a Woolf scholar, found at Longleat House in October 2022. Princeton University Press published her edition of the revised text in 2025.
What the three stories are
The work is a single comic project in three parts, not a set of unrelated sketches. Each part is a playful mock-biography of Violet, and together they mix satire, fantasy and fairy-tale invention. The table below sets out what each part is known for, based on the early-version history and the editor’s and reviewers’ descriptions.
| Part | Title | What sources establish about it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Friendships Gallery” | The early version was later held in the New York Public Library’s Berg Collection and published in 1979 by Ellen Hawkes under this title. |
| 2 | “The Magic Garden” | Contains a cottage that becomes an early comic image of women’s independent space. The editor’s and reviewers’ readings treat this as an echo of Woolf’s later thinking, not a documented source. |
| 3 | “A Story to Make You Sleep” | Set in Japan. Reporting on the edition notes exoticizing and orientalist elements, discussed in the section on historical limits below. |
The parts share a heroine and a tone. Violet is a giantess, the stories include a sea-monster and impossible journeys, and the narrative happily ignores realism, chronology and gravity. Readers who know Woolf only through her novels will find the stories far lighter than Mrs. Dalloway or To the Lighthouse.
Who the real Violet was
The fictional Violet is grounded in a real friendship. Mary Violet Dickinson was Woolf’s friend and mentor during her early writing years, and the stories exaggerate and distort that relationship for comic effect rather than recording it. The book is therefore best read as affectionate caricature between two women, not as a biography of Dickinson.

How the manuscript came to light
The discovery turned on a single archival visit. According to the University of Tennessee profile of Seshagiri, she learned of a typewritten manuscript while researching Woolf’s papers in 2018, but did not see it until October 2022. She was at Longleat House looking for an unpublished Dickinson memoir when an archivist showed her a bound typescript. It contained a revised version of stories that had been known only in an earlier draft.
The earlier draft had its own history of restriction. In Christine Froula’s review in Modern Philology, Woolf’s “comic life of Violet” is described as typed with a violet ribbon and intended to be private. Woolf’s letter to Nelly Cecil, as quoted in that review, reads: “If you keep The Life, or Myth, dont quote it—see my vanity! and dont show it: I can’t remember now how bad it is; but I know it will have to be re-written in six months; and I shant do it; and I dont want immaturities, things torn out of time, preserved, unless in some strong casket, with one key only.” The spelling and punctuation are Woolf’s own, as the review reproduces them.

Seshagiri’s discovery is therefore not the discovery that Woolf wrote these stories. It is the discovery of a more developed, revised state of a text Woolf herself had asked friends to keep private.
What the revision shows
The Guardian’s reporting on the edition says Woolf first expressed embarrassment and reluctance about circulation, then returned to the text and revised it. The reported changes include adjustments to sentence rhythm, and at least one revision incorporated a suggestion from Dickinson. That detail matters because it places the stories inside a social exchange between two friends, not only inside Woolf’s private workshop. It is the reporting’s account, and the editor’s edition is the primary source for the specific changes.

Themes worth tracking
Women’s lives and agency
Violet’s adventures mock the constraints of aristocratic propriety and the conventional expectations placed on women’s virtue and ambition. The comedy depends on the reader noticing how absurd those expectations look when a giantess is allowed to ignore them.
Space of one’s own
The cottage in “The Magic Garden” is the clearest early image of a woman’s independent space in the stories. Critics often link it to A Room of One’s Own, but the links are resonances. The sources do not establish that the cottage is the direct origin of the later essay’s title or argument.

Friendship and invention
The stories turn a friendship into a source of character, humour and imaginative freedom. Seshagiri and the publisher both stress women’s friendship and laughter as the book’s engine.
Biography as a flexible form
A mock-biography that breaks every rule of realism is an early test of forms Woolf would return to. Seshagiri connects the experiment to Woolf’s sustained interest in biography and life-writing, and the editor’s wider context places the stories alongside Orlando and Three Guineas. These are comparisons of concern and method. The sources do not show a single line of influence from one work to the next.

Historical limits
The Japan-set third story is the part that needs the most careful reading. Reporting on the edition quotes Seshagiri’s recognition that some names were meant to “sound exotic,” and the story contains exoticizing and orientalist elements typical of its period. A fair reading can admire the playful invention of the story while also identifying the cultural assumptions it carries.

Seshagiri describes the stories in plain terms: “People find Woolf intimidating—her novels like Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse might feel difficult, complicated— but these stories welcome the reader in immediately, and above all, they make you laugh,” she said, as a Distinguished Professor in Humanities at the University of Tennessee. The Guardian quotes her description of the work as “A fabulist unmaking patriarchy’s cultural inheritances through enchanting, surreal impossibilities rather than philosophy or history.”
