Orion and the Dark Review: A Warm, Uneven Animated Film About Fear

Charlie Kaufman’s adaptation pairs an anxious child with the Dark he fears. Its warmth and visual imagination charm, though critics disagree on whether the feature’s extra ideas strengthen or crowd its story.

Orion and the Dark turns a familiar childhood fear into an odd-couple adventure: anxious Orion spends a night with Dark, the very presence he dreads. The film’s warmth and imaginative nighttime world make that premise appealing, but its feature-length expansion divides the critics who reviewed it. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian found its layered storytelling sweet and engaging; Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy thought the extra turns left the film uneven and its ending adrift.

What is Orion and the Dark about?

Orion is a child burdened by a long list of worries, with darkness among his most powerful fears. When Dark appears, Orion is swept into a journey through the night. Along the way, their developing friendship invites him to see the night differently and face uncertainty rather than let fear dictate what he can do. Netflix’s official overview frames the story as a child confronting fear and the unknown, not simply defeating a monster.

The emotional center is the unlikely bond between a frightened boy and the personification of what frightens him. Orion’s mother puts the film’s reassuring message plainly: “It’s OK to be nervous — more than OK, in fact. It’s normal,” as quoted in Kennedy’s Associated Press review. That reassurance gives the adventure a gentle family-film foundation even as the story makes room for strange, self-aware ideas.

Does the film’s story work as a feature?

The film adapts Emma Yarlett’s picture book, with a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman and direction by Sean Charmatz. A picture-book premise built around one child’s fear and one night with Dark has to sustain a feature-length adventure, and the film’s additional characters and turns are where its critical split emerges.

A sweet, self-aware adventure

Peter Bradshaw’s Guardian review describes the film as sweet-natured and argues that its metafictional layers help it avoid predictability. That self-consciousness is part of the Kaufman-shaped appeal: the story is not content to remain a simple fable about a child learning not to fear the dark. Its humor and storytelling detours can give adults an additional angle while the central relationship stays accessible to children.

More plot can mean less focus

Kennedy reaches the opposite conclusion in the AP review, calling the movie “very uneven” and arguing that the expanded story loses its thread by the end. He also praises elements of the animated world and the use of childhood drawings, even while finding the overall film unsuccessful. The contrast is useful: the same ambition that gives the film its unusual texture can make the central emotional arc feel crowded rather than deepened.

The result is not a uniformly simple lesson in “conquering” fear. Orion’s relationship with Dark remains the film’s clearest idea, but viewers who want that bond to carry every turn may find the later storytelling less satisfying than the setup.

Is Orion and the Dark good for kids, and is it scary?

Netflix’s title page reviewed for this article labels the film 7+ and lists a runtime of 1h 33m; those listing details can vary by market and may change. The rating is a platform and territory-specific guide, not a universal guarantee about what an individual child will find comfortable.

The film does put fears and uncanny night imagery on screen, because Orion’s anxieties are the subject of the story. Its center, however, is reassuring: Dark becomes a companion, and the adventure is about making room for uncertainty rather than treating every frightening thought as a danger. Children who are especially sensitive to darkness or supernatural imagery may appreciate watching with an adult and talking through what unsettles them. The film’s humor and self-aware storytelling may also land differently for younger children than for adults.

Who made the film, and what is it based on?

Charlie Kaufman wrote the screenplay, adapting Emma Yarlett’s picture book, and Sean Charmatz directed. Netflix’s Tudum cast and film overview lists Jacob Tremblay as Orion, Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, Angela Bassett as Sweet Dreams, and Colin Hanks as Adult Orion. Charmatz, who had chiefly worked in storyboarding, made his feature directing debut with the film, according to The Guardian.

Goofy Movie, A
  • Goofy finds himself up to his floppy ears in misadventure and is driven to distraction when he takes Max on a fishing trip in an effort to bridge the gap and spend some quality time bonding with his offspring. Max, who has nightmares about turning into a goof like his dad, would rather spend time with the lovely Roxanne--who has finally agreed to go out with him--but is dragged along for the ride

If the film’s premise appeals to you, Yarlett’s original picture book is a natural companion: it is the source behind the adaptation. The feature expands that premise, though the available reviews do not establish a detailed scene-by-scene account of what changed between book and film.
