Po and the succession question
The film’s premise rests on Po. As Dragon Warrior, he has to identify a successor before he can take up a new spiritual leadership role in the Valley of Peace. That search is what sends him out of the valley and into contact with Zhen, and it is the thread that ties the cast together: almost every new character either helps Po with his search or stands in its way.
The two new principal characters
Zhen (Awkwafina)
Zhen is a corsac fox and a thief. Her streetwise skills complement Po’s instincts, and the central dynamic of the film is the partnership between the two of them, which is uneasy from the start. Zhen is the most prominent new figure in the cast and the closest thing the film has to a second lead.

The Chameleon (Viola Davis)
The Chameleon is a sorceress who can change her shape, and she is the film’s antagonist. According to DreamWorks, she is after Po’s Staff of Wisdom, which could allow her to resummon the master villains Po defeated into the spirit realm. That gives the villain a concrete goal tied to the franchise’s past, rather than a standalone threat.
Returning characters
Shifu (Dustin Hoffman)
Shifu is the Kung Fu master who trained Po and is the film’s returning mentor figure. He is part of the principal cast list in the official materials, and his presence keeps the franchise’s teacher-and-student relationship at the center of the story.

Tai Lung (Ian McShane)
Tai Lung is Shifu’s former student and arch-enemy. He returns from the earlier story, and Ian McShane takes the role. The official synopsis does not describe his relationship to Po, so readers should not assume a specific family or rivalry link beyond his history with Shifu.

How the new characters were animated
NBCUniversal’s behind-the-scenes material, which is the studio’s own account rather than an independent measurement, reports that DreamWorks’ character-animation team built the Chameleon’s rig with more than 8,130 controls to animate her shapeshifting. The same account says animators studied fox movement and created thousands of drawings for Zhen.
In that feature, director Mike Mitchell said:
“We wanted to make the biggest, the best and the most action-packed Kung Fu Panda film anyone has ever seen on screen.”
