Spoilers: The answers to the Friday, March 6, 2026 NYT Midi are below. Its central theme answer is VELVETROPE, with two POST entries and VIPS helping form the barrier idea.
Puzzle details and theme
Ian Livengood constructed this 10×10 Friday Midi, which has 34 clues: 14 Across and 20 Down, according to Crossword Chef. Forbes describes the Midi as a daily themed puzzle between the Mini and the main NYT Crossword, with grids that can range from 9×9 to 11×11; that is Forbes’ characterization, not a quoted NYT product specification.
The theme clue at 14-Across asks for a “Barrier to entry for some, as seen in this puzzle’s colored squares.” The answer is VELVETROPE. The two POST answers at 17-Down and 19-Down are supports for the rope, while VIPS at 31-Across are the “Big shots on one side” of it. The colored-square arrangement divides the grid in an unusual way; Forbes’ Paul Tassi notes that the barrier separates the top from the bottom.
