‘Love Story’ Review: Ryan Murphy’s JFK Jr. Drama Hits Hardest in the Scenes That Never Made Headlines

FX’s nine-episode drama is most affecting when it leaves the headlines behind. Sarah Pidgeon’s performance anchors a standout proposal scene, though the season’s focus is uneven.

Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette is a nine-episode scripted drama about the couple’s relationship, fame and private life, inspired in part by Elizabeth Beller’s biography of Bessette. Its strongest material, as TV Guide’s Jen Chaney argues, comes not from replaying familiar headlines but from intimate scenes that let the characters speak for themselves. A proposal conversation—especially Carolyn’s ambivalence about marriage—shows why Sarah Pidgeon’s performance can make the series feel more vivid than its broader, less focused portrait of the couple.

What is Love Story about?

FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette dramatizes the relationship between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, alongside the public attention surrounding them. The nine-episode limited series was created by Connor Hines and executive produced by Ryan Murphy. Sarah Pidgeon plays Bessette and Paul Anthony Kelly plays Kennedy; the supporting cast includes Grace Gummer, Naomi Watts and Alessandro Nivola.

Disney describes it as the first installment in Murphy’s Love Story anthology. The series is inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. That connection gives the drama a biographical foundation, but does not make its dialogue or private scenes a historical record. Disney’s series announcement identifies the book as its inspiration; the Hulu listing describes the season as TV-MA drama, biography and romance.

Why the quiet scenes land hardest

The series is most compelling when it turns away from the couple as a public spectacle. TV Guide critic Jen Chaney highlights a conversation about a proposal in which Carolyn explains her uncertainty about marriage. Rather than treating the moment as a plot checkpoint, the scene gives her hesitation room to register. Its fly-on-the-wall staging makes the exchange feel observed rather than announced, and Pidgeon’s performance supplies much of its emotional force.

That intimacy matters because the couple’s public image is already familiar. A private conversation can reveal tension and uncertainty that a headline cannot. The scene does not need to claim access to a definitive inner truth; it works as drama because it lets the characters’ feelings unfold in the moment. The distinction is important in a series about real people: the emotional effect belongs to the dramatization, not automatically to the historical record.

Where the season is less effective

Chaney’s praise for the proposal scene comes with a broader reservation: in her TV Guide review, she finds the season less focused and effective overall, and criticizes its length. That tension is central to the viewing experience. The show can create a close, affecting moment, yet the larger sweep of a nine-episode season does not always sustain the same concentration.

Its best scenes are not necessarily the ones with the most public significance. They are the ones that narrow the frame and let a performance carry a complicated exchange. When the drama returns to the scale of the couple’s celebrity, the familiar public story can crowd out the more revealing character work.

How to read the history—and the dramatization

The series is based in part on Beller’s biography, but it remains scripted entertainment. The Associated Press reports that its story includes Bessette’s rise at Calvin Klein and Kennedy’s efforts to keep George magazine afloat. Those are reported subjects of the series; scenes depicting private motives, conversations or events should be understood as dramatization unless independently corroborated.

That boundary is especially relevant to the show’s imagined private moments. A convincing scene is not proof that the exchange happened as shown. Viewers looking for a documentary account should treat the series as an interpretation of a public couple’s lives, not as a substitute for contemporary reporting or historical documentation.

The dispute over telling the Kennedys’ story

The series has also prompted a public disagreement about family memory and the use of real people’s lives as entertainment. The AP reported that John F. Kennedy Jr.’s nephew, Jack Schlossberg, criticized the series as profiting from his family. Executive producer Brad Simpson acknowledged the entertainment dimension while describing the production’s approach: “I’m not going to pretend like on some level we’re not making an entertainment product out of it, but we’ve tried to be ethical and we’ve tried to be incredibly sincere,” he said.

Pidgeon, who portrays Bessette, supported Schlossberg’s right to speak: “I don’t know what it’s like to have a TV show or a movie or a book written about my family, and I understand his sensitivities, and I fully support him speaking his mind,” she said. Creator Connor Hines told the AP, “We obviously had Elizabeth’s book, but I read every single newspaper article that was written about them, every tell-all,” said Hines. The comments document the production’s stated intentions and the family’s objection; neither resolves whether the resulting portrayal is accurate or fair.

Where to watch

FX presents the full season and directs viewers to Hulu. Hulu currently lists one season of nine episodes. Availability and subscription terms vary by market and can change, so check the service in your location before subscribing. In the UK, Disney+ announced a February 13, 2026 premiere, with three episodes at launch and weekly releases afterward; that was a separate regional rollout, not a universal schedule. FX’s series page links to Hulu, while Disney+ UK’s announcement gives the UK schedule.

Should you watch it?

Watch Love Story for the performances and the moments when it stops treating Kennedy and Bessette as permanent fixtures of public fascination. Pidgeon’s work and the proposal conversation offer a persuasive glimpse of what the series can do when it stays close to a private exchange. Go in expecting a dramatized, uneven season—not a definitive account of the couple’s lives or a consistently focused portrait.

For a nonfiction point of comparison, Beller’s Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy is the book the series names as its inspiration. Reading it alongside the show can help distinguish a biographical source from the choices made in adaptation.
