The reality dating series follows five international soccer players who travel to the United States and try to make romantic connections while concealing their celebrity identities. Why was hiding their soccer careers difficult?
Jamie O’Hara: rejection without the familiar introduction
O’Hara said his established football status usually answers questions before he has to speak. Without being able to say he was a Premier League footballer, he felt he had lost an advantage and had to make an impression through his personality. In a separate interview, O’Hara called the concealment “an absolute disaster” and said he disliked being unable to identify himself as a Premier League footballer. Ryan Babel: making personality do more of the work
Babel focused on the shift away from career and reputation as an easy way to open a conversation. “Then all of a sudden, we can’t use that. You have to be more creative. You have to try to inject way more personality than you’re used to,” he said. Lloyd Jones: concern about concealing his livelihood
Jones said he sometimes felt guilty because women could question whether he would be financially sustainable. His concern was not simply that he could not mention football; it was that concealing his career could leave a potential partner with an incomplete picture of his circumstances.
