What is the plot of Megalopolis?
The film is set in an imagined modern America, in the city of New Rome. Visionary artist Cesar Catilina wants to take the city toward a utopian future, while Mayor Franklyn Cicero defends the status quo. Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter and Cesar’s love interest, is caught between them. That is the official premise, not a full account of the film’s plot.
Coppola’s production notes say the story was “very loosely inspired” by the Catilinarian Conspiracy of 63 BC. He described his intention as writing “a Roman epic set in a contemporary New York that’s copied Ancient Rome.” The historical reference informs the film’s political frame; it does not make the movie a direct retelling of the conspiracy. Film at Lincoln Center likewise describes a speculative metropolis evoking contemporary New York and ancient Rome.
