‘Mrs Dalloway’ at 100: Virginia Woolf’s Novel and Its Subtle Pandemic Context

Virginia Woolf’s 1925 novel is not an outbreak narrative, but its influenza reference and interwar setting make pandemic history a meaningful, qualified lens for reading it.

Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway can be read as pandemic fiction, but not as an outbreak story. Published in 1925, the novel follows Clarissa Dalloway through one day in London as she prepares for an evening party. Its shifting perspectives connect her social world with the loneliness and war trauma of Septimus Warren Smith—and its brief reference to influenza gives the novel a quiet link to the 1918–1919 pandemic.

What happens in Mrs. Dalloway?

Clarissa Dalloway sets out to buy flowers and spends the day preparing for a party. The narration moves through her memories and perceptions as she encounters London and thinks about the people in her life, including Peter Walsh, a former lover. Alongside Clarissa’s story, the novel enters the consciousness of Septimus Warren Smith, a veteran suffering after the Great War, and touches on Clarissa’s unhappy teenage daughter.

Rather than treating these lives as separate plotlines, Woolf’s shifting interior perspective lets the city connect them. A day of ordinary movement and social arrangements becomes a way to explore isolation, class and social expectations, the afterlife of war, and the proximity of vitality and death.

Is Mrs. Dalloway a pandemic novel?

It is reasonable to read influenza as part of the novel’s historical and textual atmosphere, but “pandemic novel” needs qualification. Clarissa’s heart is described as affected by influenza in the text available through the University of Virginia’s Literature in Context. The reference is one strand in a novel principally concerned with a party day, memory, relationships, social life, and the psychological costs of war—not a sustained account of an epidemic.

In Viral Modernism: The Influenza Pandemic and Interwar Literature, Elizabeth Outka places Woolf’s novel among modernist works in which influenza’s presence can be subtle. Her chapter on the book, “On Seeing Illness: Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway,” offers a framework for considering how illness and pandemic context register without turning the novel into a medical narrative. The historical 1918–1919 influenza pandemic and the novel’s fictional setting are related contexts, not the same thing.

Outka’s book publisher’s description reports that the pandemic caused 50–100 million deaths worldwide. That range is Outka’s reported figure, not a new or independently verified estimate here. Columbia University Press’s book page provides the publication’s account of the argument and its scope.

Why the novel’s form matters

Woolf moves between minds rather than following a single, externally observed chain of events. The result makes inner experience part of the action: a walk, a memory, or a social encounter can reveal how a person is shaped by public expectations and private pain. Clarissa’s preparations for a party and Septimus’s suffering after the war are not equivalent experiences, but their juxtaposition brings questions of connection, social judgment, and survival into view.

That form also helps explain why illness need not dominate the plot to matter to a reading of the book. Influenza appears within a larger pattern of bodily vulnerability and mortality, while Woolf’s attention remains on how people perceive, remember, and respond to one another.
