In a July 12, 2022 interview with Scroll.in, Ranbir Kapoor used the phrase “It’s a blessing” to describe becoming a parent with Alia Bhatt, a partner he said shared his wish to start a family. At the time, the couple had married earlier that year and were expecting their first child. Their daughter Raha was born on November 6, 2022, according to a later India Today report. This article keeps those time frames separate and attributes every personal remark to Kapoor.
What the headline refers to
The headline comes from the closing words of Kapoor’s answer about marriage and fatherhood. He said he had always wanted children and was “in love with somebody who shares the dream of starting our own tribe.” The interview was conducted by Udita Jhunjhunwala in Yash Raj Films’ studio in Mumbai while publicity for Shamshera was underway. Kapoor was 39 and had last appeared in Sanju (2018).
Timeline: what was said and when
Three different outlets reported on Kapoor’s family and parenthood comments in mid-2022, and a later report added the birth date and his reflections after the birth. Read the dates in the table as the moment each statement was made or reported.

Family, grief and priorities
Kapoor described his father Rishi Kapoor’s illness as a major setback for the family, and said the family spent part of the Covid period in hospital. He recalled moving between his father’s treatment in New York and the Shamshera shoot. From that experience came a shift in how he weighed work against home. In his words: “But you also realise that your family has to be your priority.”

Parenthood in Kapoor’s words
A role he felt unprepared for
Kapoor said the roles of husband and parent felt greater to him than his film roles. He called parenthood both thrilling and scary, because a person is unqualified and does not know what to expect. That uncertainty is the context for “It’s a blessing”: he was describing hope and nerves at once, not certainty.

Presence over availability
According to the India Today report from July 11, 2022, Kapoor said his generation of fathers was often less present because of work, and that he wanted a different dynamic with his children. In his words: “I want to have a different dynamic with my children. I want them to be close to me also.”
A balanced life, as an aspiration
The same report says he did not want Bhatt to sacrifice her dreams, and that the couple would need to plan a life in which both personal and professional commitments could be enjoyed. This is what Kapoor said he wanted when the interview took place. It is not a documented description of how the couple’s household was run in later years.

After the birth
In March 2023, after Raha’s birth, Kapoor said he had always wanted a family but that fatherhood was different from what he had imagined. His assessment: “It is a million times better than what you would have thought.” That reflection came from a different interview, months after the one in which he spoke about expecting a child, and should be read as his later view.
Shamshera: the film behind the interview
Shamshera is a period action film set in the nineteenth century during British rule. Kapoor plays two roles: the rebel Balli and Balli’s father, Shamshera.

Why he took both roles
Kapoor said he was first offered Balli, liked the story and the approach of director Karan Malhotra, and asked to play Shamshera as well. He described the film as a departure from the romantic and inwardly conflicted characters he was usually offered. He also said that making it alongside Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra was exhausting.

Music and career
Kapoor said songs and scores help shape how audiences remember performers, and that music gave his characters direction. He named singers Mohit Chauhan and Arijit Singh, lyricists Irshad Kamil and Amitabh Bhattacharya, and composers A. R. Rahman and Pritam as people whose work contributed to his career. The interview also reports that Mithoon composed the songs for Shamshera.
How to read a promotional interview like this one
Celebrity interviews published during a film’s promotion mix personal reflection with publicity. A few checks make them more reliable:
- Note the publication date and what was being promoted at the time.
- Separate what the subject said about hopes and intentions from facts about what happened later.
- Look for later reporting before treating a statement as settled, as with Raha’s reported birth date.
- Attribute private family details to the speaker, and avoid turning one interview into a full account of a marriage.
- Check whether a quote is a direct quotation or a reporter’s paraphrase. Several details here come from paraphrase in secondary coverage.
Read this way, the 2022 interview is a dated account of a family in transition, not a complete record of its private life.
