Love Actually is not one literal family tree. It is an ensemble of romantic and family stories linked by work, friendship, a wedding and a school Christmas pageant. Mapping those connections by type makes clear who is related, who is in love, and who simply shares a scene.
How to read the connections
Universal describes the 2003 film as a story of “eight London couples,” while writer-director Richard Curtis’s production notes explain that its separate stories combine into one overall story. The different counts sometimes used to describe the film’s strands reflect creative framing, not a definitive tally of every plotline. For a character map, separate four kinds of connection: romance, family, work and shared social settings.

David and Natalie

Peter, Juliet and Mark
Peter and Juliet marry. Mark is Peter’s best friend and has unreturned feelings for Juliet. Their wedding draws people from other storylines, including Sarah, making it a social intersection rather than a family link between all the guests.
Sarah and Karl
Sarah works at Harry’s design company and is attracted to her coworker Karl. A phone call from her brother interrupts their attempt to become intimate, bringing her family obligations into her romantic story.

Sam and Joanna
Sam falls in love with Joanna, his American classmate. He learns drums so he can accompany her at the school Christmas pageant.
Colin and the American women
Colin’s comic storyline follows his search for romance with American women he meets. It is a parallel romantic strand, not a family connection to the other characters.

Family and household connections
Harry and Karen
Harry and Karen are married and form a household strand in the film. Their story does not make the characters in other strands their relatives.
Daniel and Sam
Daniel is Sam’s stepfather. After the death of Sam’s mother, they share a family story; Sam’s romance with Joanna is a separate connection.

Work, friendship and shared events
Harry’s workplace
Harry’s design company connects his story to Sarah and Karl’s: Sarah and Karl are coworkers, and Sarah works for Harry. Those professional links do not make the three a family.
Billy Mack and Joe
Aging rock star Billy Mack is trying to make a comeback, with Joe as his manager and companion. Their friendship becomes an important emotional resolution, but it is not a romance or kinship tie.
The wedding and the school pageant
Peter and Juliet’s wedding brings characters from other strands together as guests, including Sarah. The school Christmas pageant is the clearest convergence point: Sam and Joanna perform, while adults connected to other stories attend. These events let separate plots touch without making the attendees relatives.
Why it feels like one connected story
Curtis described the film as several stories edited into one overall story. In the production notes, he compared the result to “the edited highlights of several stories” whose ingredients combine into one coherent whole. In an interview with TIME, he also described the freedom to move among storylines after each scene as “playing three-dimensional chess.”
That structure explains the family-tree shorthand: recurring people, workplaces and gatherings create a web of connections. The most accurate diagram labels each line—such as “stepfather and stepson,” “coworkers,” “best friends,” “wedding guests” or “attends the same pageant”—instead of treating every connection as a family tie.
