ABC’s reboot of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is hosted by Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, the co-founders of The Home Edit, and it is built around redesigning each home to fit the family who will live in it. It premiered in January 2025 as a new iteration of the franchise, announced for the 2024–2025 season. This article covers that ABC version, not a newly announced 2026 season, and it separates what ABC and its partners have stated from what has been reported only by one outlet.

- The ABC reboot (January 2025): the version covered here. ABC’s official show page is the reference for its current description and credited team.
- HGTV’s earlier revival: a separate version hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson. HGTV’s show page still lists it, so a search can surface it instead of the ABC reboot.
- The original series: the format the reboot describes itself as following. Its own details are not covered in this article.
Who hosts and designs the homes
Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin host. ABC says their organizing expertise is used to design each home around the family, which is the most visible change from earlier versions. Designers Wendell Holland and Arianne Bellizaire are also credited on ABC’s cast page.
Shearer described the difference in an interview with Axios on January 2, 2025: “There’s just a lot more story. There’s more heart, there’s more humor, there’s more attachment to the families.”

What stays and what changes in the format
The reboot keeps the core of the franchise. ABC’s official show description says: “Like the original series, this reimagining will showcase heartwarming stories, inspired volunteers and mind-blowing builds for deserving families who give back to their communities.”
The new element is the approach to the house itself. ABC describes an inside-out process in which the builder team reconfigures each home around the family’s lifestyle and needs, rather than building a generic layout for the family to adapt to.

Two production details come from Axios’s premiere-day reporting:
- Family involvement: families take part during the renovation rather than only seeing the finished home.
- Shorter build period: the process was reported to have been shortened from one week to four days. This is the reported schedule for the build, not a guarantee that every episode followed it.
The homebuilder: Taylor Morrison
Taylor Morrison was announced as the reboot’s exclusive homebuilder in a company release dated July 22, 2024. The release described it as the first exclusive homebuilder relationship in the franchise and said the company would build brand-new homes for families. Chairman and CEO Sheryl Palmer said: “This will be a season unlike any other as we deliver so much more than beautiful new homes for deserving families, and I can’t wait for our communities and viewers at home to witness the magic unfold.”

What families receive
Axios reported on January 2, 2025 that families received a lump sum to help with costs tied to the house, according to producer Michael Heyerman. That report gives no amount and does not explain how the payment is taxed. Heyerman also told Axios: “It’s a TV show, there are financial implications to winning a prize on a game show, receiving a car on a talk show and receiving a house on ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,’” which is a reminder that a house from a TV show carries its own financial obligations. Anyone who is considering a similar situation should get personal tax advice rather than rely on the show’s description.

ABC announced on May 26, 2024 that the reboot would air on ABC with next-day streaming on Hulu. That was the stated plan at the time of announcement. Check ABC or Hulu for current episode listings before assuming where a particular episode is available, because distribution can change after launch.
Audience figures
ABC’s May 26, 2024 announcement said the hosts have “more than 9 million fans.” That figure describes the hosts’ social-media following as of that release, not the show’s audience. The sources available for this article do not include a named viewership or ratings figure for the reboot, so no audience size is claimed here.
How to compare it with earlier versions
When you compare this reboot with other versions of the franchise, check these five points for each one:
- Who hosts, and whether the design team is credited separately
- Whether the design starts from the family’s lifestyle, or from a fixed plan
- Who the builder is, and whether that builder is exclusive to the show
- How much the family takes part during the renovation
- How long the build takes, and whether the figure applies to every episode
Earlier seasons were not all built the same way, so answers to these questions can differ from one version or season to another.
