Dear Maya is worth watching for Manisha Koirala’s affecting portrayal of a lonely woman jolted into hope by two teenagers’ deception. Its emotional premise has real pull, but the film’s over-explanation, rambling passages and slower second half often blunt that impact.
What is Dear Maya about?
Written and directed by Sunaina Bhatnagar, the 2017 film begins in Shimla, where reclusive Maya (Manisha Koirala) lives apart from the world around her. Teenage neighbours Anna (Madiha Imam) and Ira (Shreya Chaudhary) invent a romantic admirer named Ved and send Maya letters in his name. The correspondence draws Maya out of isolation; when she disappears, the girls’ friendship fractures. Six years later, Anna and Ira reconnect and try to discover what happened to her.
The premise links youthful mischief to adult loneliness and its consequences. The six-year jump shifts the film from Maya’s emerging hope to the estranged friends’ attempt to make sense of what they set in motion.
Why is the film moving?
Manisha Koirala gives Maya emotional weight
Koirala’s performance is the film’s most consistently praised element. Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in calls her affecting as Maya, whose response to the letters brings what Ramnath describes as “unanticipated and often frightening hope.” NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee also highlights the emotional shift in Koirala’s portrayal and identifies the film as a female-centered drama.

Shubhra Gupta’s review for The Indian Express points to a small but telling moment: Maya tastes something for the first time and smiles. It is a glimpse of a person rediscovering pleasure, and Koirala makes that change legible without needing the scene to carry a grand revelation.
The younger characters have texture
Ramnath also praises Imam and Chaudhary, noting the film’s attentive treatment of youthful speech and friendship. Anna and Ira’s shared scheme begins in the intimate world of teenage closeness; the later rupture gives their actions a longer emotional consequence than they anticipated.

Why does Dear Maya feel overstretched?
Exposition and rambling weaken the momentum
Ramnath argues that the film overexplains its characters and relationships, lets too many sequences ramble, and has dialogue spell out feelings the audience can already read. Those choices can make the story feel less emotionally assured: scenes that might gain force from a pause or a gesture instead underline their meaning.
The second half loses pace
Several reviews point to a slowdown after the story’s shift. Gupta says the film works in fits and starts and loses momentum after the move to Delhi. Chatterjee likewise notes that the second half slows as Anna and Ira try to overcome years of misunderstanding. Suhani Singh, writing for India Today, finds the plot contrived and thin, and argues that the back half gives too much room to the estranged friendship and redemption.

These criticisms concern different parts of the same structure: the story’s central idea is emotionally suggestive, but the search for answers and the effort to repair the girls’ relationship do not sustain the first half’s pull for every reviewer.

That depends on what matters most to you in a drama. If you respond to performances, stories about isolation, and moments when hope returns in an unexpected form, Koirala’s work gives the film a strong reason to watch. If you prefer tightly paced plotting and restrained exposition, the rambling scenes and slower second half may frustrate you.

The reviews do not point to a single consensus verdict. Ramnath’s concise formulation in Scroll.in captures the mixed response: “Yet, there is heart in the flab.” The film’s emotional sincerity and its narrative excess are both central to the experience, rather than flaws that cancel each other out.
