The trailer for Ek Je Chhilo Raja introduces a man who may be a long-lost prince: a sanyasi appears at the Bhawal estate twelve years after the middle prince, Mahendra Kumar Choudhuri, apparently died in Darjeeling. Directed by Srijit Mukherji, the 2018 Bengali drama is inspired by the Bhawal Sanyasi case, but its dramatic account should not be mistaken for a complete history of the disputed case.
What is Ek Je Chhilo Raja about?
SVF’s synopsis identifies Mahendra Kumar Choudhuri as the middle prince of the Bhawal Estate. It says he was taken to Darjeeling for treatment with his wife, brother-in-law and a family doctor, apparently died there, and was cremated there. Twelve years later, a sanyasi arrives at the estate. His appearance prompts speculation that he is the lost prince.
The trailer’s central question is whether the returning man is who he claims to be. The film’s teaser captured that theme with the line: “Laws dictate judgements. But some judgements become the law”. SVF’s August 2018 announcement says the story spans more than two decades; that is the distributor’s description of the film, not an independently verified measure of the historical events.
Is the film based on a true story?
SVF describes the Bhawal Sanyasi court case as the film’s inspiration. That makes Ek Je Chhilo Raja a dramatization inspired by a real case, not a substitute for a legal history. The synopsis presents the prince’s apparent death and the sanyasi’s possible identity as the story’s premise; it does not establish every disputed historical detail or the full holdings of the courts.

When did the teaser and trailer come out?
SVF announced the official teaser on August 13, 2018, describing its release as the eve of the 72nd death anniversary of the Bhawal Sanyasi Raja. That anniversary reference is SVF’s contemporaneous framing. The Daily Star reported on September 10, 2018, that SVF had released the trailer and that Mukherji posted it on Facebook. The report gave October 12, 2018, as the film’s release date. The teaser and the later trailer are separate releases.
