Cast and crew said the scene’s impact came from both its intimate performances and a carefully constructed grave set.
Where the mass-grave scene falls in Civil War
Alex Garland’s 2024 film follows journalists crossing a near-future United States during civil conflict, trying to document the fighting and reach Washington. Its focus is the reporters’ work amid the conflict, rather than a full explanation of the competing factions, as the Associated Press noted in its March 15, 2024 report.
In the sequence, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) has become separated from her colleagues. The others find her and another journalist in an open field, held by militiamen unloading bodies from a truck into a crude grave. Plemons’s character, identifiable by red plastic sunglasses and an assault rifle, appears to lead the group. His question—“What kind of American are you?”—becomes a test with lethal consequences.
Lee (Kirsten Dunst), Joel (Wagner Moura), Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and another journalist try to find a way to free the captives. Sammy’s vehicle interrupts the standoff, running down the gunman and allowing the journalists to escape, though the group suffers losses. The encounter moves the story toward its final act. The Los Angeles Times account of the scene and the AP both report the exchange and the broader landscape of mass graves and displacement.

What the cast said about performing it
Cailee Spaeny and Jesse Plemons
Spaeny said she spent about half a day performing with Plemons while separated from the rest of the cast. He stayed in character, drilled her and improvised. The sequence was shot over two days; Spaeny said repeating the work got under her skin. Her account, reported by the Los Angeles Times on April 12, 2024, conveys how sustained the confrontation was for the actors, not simply how it appears in the finished film.
Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura
Dunst approached the encounter from Lee’s immediate need to survive and get out. She said she was not afraid of Plemons as an actor, but the setting itself was frightening: “But just looking at the mass grave, all of it around me, was terrifying.”

Moura described the scene’s xenophobia and racism as personally affecting, connecting them to anti-immigration attitudes and polarization. In an April 17, 2024 ABC News Australia interview, he said, “The xenophobia and racism in that scene really affected me because this is another layer of polarisation — it’s racism, xenophobia, anti-immigration, all those things.” That is Moura’s interpretation of the material, rather than a definitive statement of the film’s authorial intent.
How Plemons came to the role
Plemons was a late replacement: Garland told the Los Angeles Times that the actor originally cast withdrew about a week before principal photography. Dunst suggested Plemons, and Garland called the change “a stunning bit of good luck.” Garland did not identify the actor who left.

How the filmmakers staged the grave and concealed the cameras
The grave was a constructed film set, not documentary footage. Production designer Caty Maxey said she researched mass graves and used a model to work out the number and scale of bodies. The set was about 40 feet long. “It was a mass grave. About 40 feet long,” she told The Credits.
Maxey described building the bodies in layers: rough dummies made from shapes and wigs formed the lowest level, with more articulated dummies and real stunt performers placed above. That mix created depth and detail across a large set without making every figure in the pit a fully realized dummy.

Director Alex Garland and cinematographer Rob Hardy arranged the scene so the cameras would not be visible. Hardy hid in the pit intended to represent the grave. Spaeny said that approach helped the sequence feel immersive. The concealment mattered to the scene’s effect: the camera could remain close to the encounter without appearing as an object inside the characters’ environment.

The reporting on this scene does not establish which faction Plemons’s militiaman belongs to. His identity is left unnamed, and the encounter should not be treated as a factual representation of a real-world political group. The film’s invented conflict and Moura’s comments about themes such as racism and anti-immigration are distinct: the former describes the story world, while the latter is an actor’s response to what the scene evokes.
