A Marie Claire report from October 10, 2025 attributes that cancellation to The Hollywood Reporter. That leaves the finale’s cliffhanger unresolved on screen. Below is what the closing scene shows, what it leaves open, and what the cast has said about a continuation that was never made.
Season 2 status: canceled, with no renewal in place
Marie Claire, reporting on October 10, 2025, says Prime Video canceled Butterfly and attributes the confirmation to The Hollywood Reporter. That original trade report was not checked directly for this article, so treat the cancellation as secondary reporting. The reason for the cancellation is not established in the available coverage, and nothing in that coverage should be read as an explanation.
The same Marie Claire report, citing The Hollywood Reporter, says the series spent two weeks in Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts before the cancellation. The report does not state which year the Nielsen figure covers, and the Nielsen release itself was not reviewed, so do not present that number as an independently confirmed Nielsen result.
Before the cancellation, there was no renewal to rely on. In August 2025, star and executive producer Daniel Dae Kim told Us Weekly: “I have some idea of what has happened but I don’t want to put the cart before the horse because we don’t have a renewal yet.” That comment was accurate when he made it. The later cancellation report settled the question it left open.

What the finale shows (spoilers)
The first season runs six episodes. Its closing sequence shows David, Rebecca, Eunju and Minhee apparently together as a family. Eunju and Rebecca then go to the restaurant bathroom. David later finds Eunju gravely wounded and Rebecca gone.
What the episode establishes
- Eunju is seriously injured when David finds her.
- Rebecca is missing at that point.
What it leaves open
- Whether Rebecca attacked Eunju. The episode does not show the attack.
- Whether Rebecca left voluntarily or was taken. The episode does not say.
- Whether Eunju survives. Her survival is not confirmed in the reporting reviewed.
Ready Steady Cut’s August 13, 2025 recap notes that the episode does not show Rebecca committing the crime and leaves room for her innocence. Its writer then offers a darker reading, which is opinion rather than something the episode shows. Keep those two levels separate when you discuss the ending.

The two readings of Rebecca, compared
Viewers have settled on two main interpretations. Both are theories about story events that the episode never depicts.
| Reading | What in the episode supports it | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Rebecca attacked Eunju and disappeared by choice | She and Eunju go to the bathroom together, and Rebecca is missing when David finds Eunju. | The attack itself, since it is not shown, and any motive. |
| Rebecca was framed, taken, or caught in a larger scheme | The episode does not show her committing the crime, and her absence is unexplained. | Who was responsible or what the scheme was, since no later episode exists to confirm it. |
The footage does not settle either reading. Any firm answer would require material the series did not produce.

Well, I’ll say that the ramifications of that event lead to some serious soul searching and in some cases, changes of personality.” He also described possible travel beyond Korea, saying the show’s international scope could take David and Rebecca elsewhere.

The series is reported to be based on a graphic novel series published by Boom! Studios, according to the Us Weekly interview from August 17, 2025. That reporting supports the adaptation relationship only. It does not verify a specific edition, ISBN, price, or current availability, so check the publisher’s listing and the edition’s contents before buying. The available reporting also does not establish whether the comic covers the events of the finale, so do not assume it answers the questions the show leaves open.
In short, the ending is a cliffhanger with no sequel. Eunju is wounded, Rebecca is missing, and the attacker’s identity and Rebecca’s motives remain undetermined.
