Jamie Chung voices both Dr. Harleen Quinzel and Harley Quinn in Batman: Caped Crusader. Reveal coverage describes the casting as Asian American. DC’s official features discuss the character’s reinvention in detail but do not use that phrase themselves, so the identity framing here is attributed to the reveal coverage. The version of Harley the series builds also differs sharply from the one most viewers know: she chooses her criminal path, and the Joker is not the force that made her.
Who voices Harley Quinn in Batman: Caped Crusader?
Jamie Chung voices Harleen Quinzel, the psychiatrist, and Harley Quinn, her criminal alter ego. Hamish Linklater voices Batman. The casting is the element of the reveal that reviewers and readers have picked up most, and it is the reason the series is being discussed in terms of an Asian American Harley Quinn. Readers quoting the casting should credit reveal coverage for that description, since DC’s own pieces focus on what the character becomes rather than on the actor’s background.
Is this Harley Quinn connected to the Joker?
Not in the way most audiences expect. Many earlier portrayals build Harley around her relationship with the Joker. In this series, that relationship is not the starting point. Vanity Fair’s June 2024 interview describes a self-appointed vigilante whose crime spree targets Gotham’s wealthy, and reports that the Joker is not a presence in her life at that point in the story. Chung described the performance as quieter, more calculating, and more menacing than the usual take.
DC’s August 2024 feature goes further in describing her as cruel and corrupt from within, rather than a well-meaning psychiatrist who is corrupted by the Joker. The same piece places her within a broader reworking of Gotham’s women, including Renee Montoya and Barbara Gordon. Vanity Fair’s account is tied to the story as described in June 2024, so it should not be read as a permanent statement about any future connection to the Joker.

Harleen and Harley: the persona reversal
The series inverts the expected contrast between the two identities. In the older pattern, the criminal persona is the wild, theatrical one, and the professional persona is the sober cover. Here, Harleen is the one who reads as bubbly, and Harley is the controlled one. Chung explained the shift in a DC.com interview dated August 5, 2026:
“So instead of her in costume as Harley Quinn being bubbly, they really wanted her to be disarming as a shrink.”
Linklater, in the same interview, described the direction he received for Batman: “They wanted something a lot quieter and a lot calmer, sort of spookier in that regard.” The writer of DC’s September 2024 feature reads the performance as a deliberate role reversal: Harleen comes across as bubbly, while Harley speaks more slowly and monotonously and acts with methodical control. That is the writer’s interpretation of the performance, not a stated production rule.
The table below compares the four points where this Harley departs from earlier portrayals. The earlier column describes common patterns only, because prior Harley Quinn versions across comics, films, and television do not follow a single canon.
| Axis | Batman: Caped Crusader | Earlier portrayals (common pattern) |
|---|---|---|
| Origin of criminal identity | Self-chosen; not presented as the result of the Joker’s influence | Often tied to her relationship with the Joker |
| Which persona is the mask | Harleen is the cover, read as bubbly; Harley is the controlled identity | Varies by version; not a single canon |
| Demeanor | Slower, cooler, and more menacing as Harley | Varies by version; not a single canon |
| Setting and story | 1940s, noir-inspired, independent Gotham continuity | Varies by version; not a single canon |
Setting and continuity
DC describes the series as noir-inspired and set in the 1940s, with its own continuity. That means it is best understood as a standalone interpretation rather than a retelling of a specific earlier storyline. Bruce Timm, an executive producer, explained his intended take on Batman in a Vanity Fair interview dated June 20, 2024: “I wanted to do this emotionally messed-up version of Batman, who’s extremely aloof and almost inhuman.” Timm’s comment concerns Batman, but it frames the tone that the Harley storyline sits inside.
