Avatar: Fire and Ash did not out-earn Avengers: Endgame at the worldwide box office. On Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime chart, accessed October 8, 2026, Fire and Ash stands at about $1.486 billion and Endgame at about $2.927 billion. The headline’s claim that the Avatar sequel “torches” Marvel’s film does not hold up on the box-office numbers, and the film’s “near-perfect” praise is an opinion rather than a measured result. The sections below set out the figures, the dates behind them, and what the comparison can and cannot show.
How much Avatar: Fire and Ash made worldwide
Box-office figures for a film this size change over time, so each number below carries its source and date. All figures are nominal, meaning they are reported grosses and not adjusted for inflation.

|---|---|---|---|
| Estimated worldwide opening | $345 million | Associated Press, December 21, 2025 | An estimate for the opening period, split into $88 million domestic and $257 million international. |
| Crossing $1 billion worldwide | Milestone reached | The Walt Disney Company, January 4, 2026 | Disney called it the third film in the franchise to pass $1 billion. The milestone came less than three weeks after the December 19, 2025 release. |
| Worldwide lifetime gross | $1,485,999,890 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 | The reported total for the film’s full theatrical run to that date. |
Did Avatar: Fire and Ash beat Avengers: Endgame?
No. Both films appear on the same Box Office Mojo worldwide chart, which makes it the cleanest basis for comparison:
| Film | Worldwide lifetime gross | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar: Fire and Ash | $1,485,999,890 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 |
| Avengers: Endgame | $2,926,549,214 | Box Office Mojo, accessed October 8, 2026 |
Endgame’s total is nearly twice that of Fire and Ash. The gap is not a matter of interpretation. Disney had reported an interim Endgame global cumulative gross of $2.885 billion on September 27, 2026, but that figure was superseded. On October 4, 2026, Disney announced that Endgame had passed Avatar to reclaim the all-time worldwide record after its 2026 Encore re-release.
#1 Best Overall
- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
A few limits apply to any gross comparison:
- Gross is not profit. Studio costs, marketing, and revenue shares are not part of these figures.
- Gross is not a count of tickets sold. Reported grosses are dollar totals, and a higher price mix in one market can change them.
- Re-releases add to a film’s total over time. Endgame’s 2026 Encore run is part of its current figure, so the two films’ totals were built over different periods.
- The $345 million opening estimate and the $1.486 billion lifetime total come from different stages of the run and should not be read as a single trend.
What “torches” could mean, and what the evidence supports
A headline can make a comparison without a number to back it. The reading that would make “torches” accurate is a claim about pace or a specific metric, such as opening weekend or the speed of the run to a billion dollars. The figures reviewed here do not include Endgame’s opening or its time to $1 billion on the same basis, so they cannot confirm or refute a pace claim. What they do establish is that on lifetime worldwide gross, Fire and Ash finished well behind Endgame.
The “near-perfect” label
“Near-perfect” is a critical judgment, and it belongs to the headline rather than to any box-office result. The coverage used for this article does not identify a named critic, aggregate score, or consensus that supports the phrase, and it does not establish which Marvel film the headline means. Readers who want to test the praise should look for named reviews and an aggregate score with a date attached.
