The 2023 court case and later investigations are separate matters.
What the video showed—and when the incident happened
The footage became public in March 2026, but it depicted an altercation from February 2023. ABC News reported that Paul threw chairs during the incident with Mortensen. ABC also said police records indicated that a child nearby was struck; the Associated Press described the child as watching and crying. Those details are attributed to reporting and records, not presented here as an independent finding.
The video’s release prompted ABC to announce that Paul’s season of The Bachelorette would not proceed at that time. The season had been due to premiere on March 22, 2026. ABC’s announcement followed the video’s release; the network also described a separate open investigation at the time, so the reporting does not establish that the video was the only factor in its decision.
What happened to the 2023 case
The 2023 incident had already led to a criminal case. ABC, citing the Salt Lake Tribune and court documents, reported that Paul entered a plea in abeyance to a felony aggravated-assault count in August 2023. Under the agreement described by ABC, the charge could be reduced after three years if she complied with its terms, and other charges were dismissed.

The Associated Press later summarized the outcome as Paul pleading guilty to an assault charge that was reduced to a misdemeanor, with other counts dismissed. These accounts describe the case’s procedural history differently; neither supports saying that every charge resulted in a conviction.
How later allegations differ from the 2023 case
Later allegations and investigations are distinct from the 2023 case. On April 15, 2026, the Associated Press reported that the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office declined to file new charges over later allegations. The office cited insufficient evidence for some incidents and time limits for others. That decision concerned those later allegations; it did not undo the reported plea in the 2023 case.

Scripps News reported on the release of body-camera video, photographs and audio relating to a later investigation. The report quoted police as saying the evidence did not support filing charges against either party in that investigation. Its page does not establish a publication date, so the materials should not be assigned a more precise timeline here.

ABC News reported that Paul’s representative alleged abuse, while Mortensen denied wrongdoing. Those are competing statements, not findings that resolve the allegations.

Disney Entertainment Television, in a statement quoted by ABC News on March 19, 2026, said: “In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of ‘The Bachelorette’ at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family.”
