The connection is an interpretation of the story, not a confirmed explanation from the show’s creators.
Why does Meemaw seem so different in The Big Bang Theory?
The contrast is partly a difference in portrayal. In Young Sheldon, Annie Potts plays Meemaw as daring, free-spirited and often chaotic. In The Big Bang Theory episode “The Meemaw Materialization,” June Squibb’s version comes across as more taciturn and restrained.
Season 7 gives viewers events that could help explain a shift in behavior: Meemaw faces consequences for her choices, rather than relying on charm to escape them. That makes the season a plausible bridge between the two characterizations, but not proof that the later Meemaw’s personality has one specific cause.
What happens to Meemaw in Season 7?
Her illegal-gambling arrest brings consequences
In Season 7, Episode 7, “A Proper Wedding and Skeletons in the Closet,” Meemaw is arrested for illegal gambling. The episode follows a tornado that destroyed her home, adding to the upheaval around her.

Rhonda refuses to let her charm her way out
Episode 10, “Community Service and the Key to a Happy Marriage,” introduces Rhonda, played by Octavia Spencer. Rhonda is a firm Prohibition Officer who does not give in to Meemaw’s charm or her attempts to play the harmless elderly lady. Meemaw tries to avoid her community-service work, including enlisting George Sr. and having Sheldon do it for her.
The story turns that evasion into a moment of reckoning. Meemaw must confront how her behavior affects other people, and she apologizes to Mary after risking Georgie’s employment prospects. A recap at [c-prime] reads the experience as a push toward greater responsibility and maturity. It is a reasonable interpretation of the events, not a stated creator explanation tying Rhonda directly to the version of Meemaw in The Big Bang Theory.

What the production has said about the two portrayals
There is a separate, behind-the-scenes reason the contrast is noticeable: the production itself found the versions difficult to place back to back. In a May 10, 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight, The Big Bang Theory showrunner Steve Holland said the team considered including Meemaw in Sheldon and Amy’s wedding. With the wedding finale already accommodating many characters, and Annie Potts having built a substantial version of Meemaw on Young Sheldon, Holland said it felt difficult to see the two portrayals back to back. A recorded phone message from Meemaw was cut because the episode ran long. The interview is available at [c-et].
Holland was describing a production decision about the wedding episode, not confirming that the shows’ storylines explain Meemaw’s later personality. His comment supports the observation that audiences may experience the performances as distinct; it does not establish an in-universe cause.
