The judge sentenced him to 40 years, but commuted the first five years to time served; the sentence then calls for 15 years of probation and a conditional 20-year prison term.
Why was Young Thug released from jail?
Williams had been held in the Fulton County case since his 2022 arrest. On October 31, 2024, he entered pleas and was sentenced by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Paige Reese Whitaker. The judge commuted the first five years of the sentence to time served, allowing his immediate release.
The plea followed negotiations with prosecutors that broke down. The Associated Press reported that Williams entered his plea without a negotiated agreement, leaving the sentence to the judge. Associated Press report on the plea and sentence.
What pleas did he enter?
The plea was not a blanket admission of guilt to every charge described in the reporting. The AP reported that Williams pleaded guilty to one gang charge, three drug charges and two gun charges. He pleaded no contest to another gang charge and a racketeering-conspiracy charge.

A no-contest plea means the defendant does not contest the charge, but may be sentenced for it as if he had pleaded guilty. Williams’ pleas resolved his part of the case at that point; they did not themselves resolve proceedings involving the other defendants.
What does the 40-year sentence mean?
The sentence was structured in three parts. The 40-year total did not require Williams to serve 40 years immediately:

| Final 20 years | A backloaded prison term. If Williams completes probation without violations, the term is to be commuted to time served. If he violates probation, he must serve it in addition to any penalty imposed for the violation, according to the AP. |
The AP also reported that Williams had to stay away from metro Atlanta for the first 10 years of probation, with exceptions for weddings, funerals, graduations or a family member’s serious illness. Those were reported conditions; they should not be taken as a complete list of the terms of probation.
How the case reached the plea
The indictment accused Williams and more than two dozen other people of conspiring to violate Georgia’s anti-racketeering law. Those were allegations, not findings of guilt for every person named. Jury selection began in January 2023 and took nearly 10 months. Prosecutors had begun presenting evidence nearly a year before Williams changed his plea, according to the AP’s 2024 account.

Williams spoke to the judge about his decision and apologized, saying, “I’ve learned from my mistakes, you know. I come from nothing and I’ve made something and I didn’t take full advantage of it. I’m sorry.” His lead defense attorney, Brian Steel, told the AP that Williams wanted the possibility of going home sooner because his children were hurting.

On April 3, 2025, the AP reported that Judge Whitaker declined Fulton County prosecutors’ request to revoke Williams’ probation over a viral social-media post. The judge cautioned him about social-media use. Prosecutors had alleged in a filing that Williams’ conduct threatened the safety of witnesses and prosecutors and compromised ongoing legal proceedings; that was their allegation, not a judicial finding. That ruling describes the outcome of that specific request. It does not establish whether there have been later probation proceedings or define Williams’ current day-to-day status.
