A Delhi court issued summons to YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in July 2024 in a civil defamation suit filed by BJP member Suresh Karamshi Nakhua. The order began the case’s court process; it did not decide that Rathee had defamed Nakhua. Nakhua sought ₹20 lakh in damages over a Rathee video and named Google LLC and X Corp. as defendants.
Why was Dhruv Rathee summoned?
On July 19, 2024, a Saket Court order directed that summons in Nakhua’s suit and notice of his application for interim relief be served on the defendants. The order also set out steps for service, including by electronic means, ahead of the date then scheduled for August 6, 2024. The July 19 order and LiveLaw’s report describe a procedural direction, not a ruling on whether the statements were defamatory.
A summons requires a defendant to respond to a case. It is not a finding of liability, an award of damages, or confirmation that the plaintiff’s allegations are true.
What did Suresh Nakhua allege?
Nakhua’s suit concerned a video Rathee published on July 7, 2024, titled “My Reply to Godi Youtubers | Elvish Yadav | Dhruv Rathee.” Nakhua alleged that the video associated him with “violent and abusive trolls” and harmed his reputation. That description is Nakhua’s allegation as reported by LiveLaw and The New Indian Express; it is not a court finding.

Who was named in the suit, and what relief did Nakhua seek?
The defendants named were Dhruv Rathee, Google LLC, and X Corp. Nakhua sought ₹20 lakh in damages and asked for restrictions on Rathee’s online posts about him, according to LiveLaw’s account of the suit. The ₹20 lakh was the amount claimed, not money awarded by the court in the July 2024 order.
What has happened since the 2024 summons?
The latest located report specifically about this suit is Bar & Bench’s March 11, 2026 report. It says a Delhi court issued a show-cause notice to notary Suman Sharma over a defective affidavit filed in the case. Bar & Bench’s topic index also lists earlier reporting about affidavit defects and a December 2025 costs order, but the index alone does not provide enough context to describe that order in detail.

The materials available here do not establish the suit’s status after March 11, 2026. The August 6, 2024 date was the next hearing date specified in the initial reports, not a current hearing date.
