What that record does not do is confirm the Dutton family, the character Teonna Rainwater, or any individual scene as historical fact. The accurate answer separates the documented system from the invented people who move through it.
What the series says it is
Paramount’s official series announcement on June 20, 2022, describes 1923 as an origin story about two Dutton generations struggling with historic drought, lawlessness, Prohibition, and cattle theft. According to the studio, the story is set in a Montana depression that came almost a decade before the national downturn. That is the studio’s own description of the premise. It is useful for understanding what the show is trying to do, but it is a marketing synopsis, not an independent historical account, and it does not establish that the Dutton family existed. Paramount’s 2022 announcement is the primary reference for that framing.
What is documented about the boarding-school system
The Department of the Interior’s Volume 1 announcement of May 11, 2022, reported that its investigation found the federal Indian boarding-school system operated from 1819 to 1969. Forced removal and assimilation were its central policies. The findings are the basis for the historical background the series draws on, and they are the reason the boarding-school plot should be discussed as rooted in real policy. The Volume 1 announcement is the primary source for those findings.
How children’s identities were targeted
The Department’s findings describe specific methods used to alter children’s identities. According to the 2022 announcement, these included:

The 2024 final-volume findings
The Department’s final-volume announcement of July 30, 2024, is the most recent federal update in the official record. It reported 417 institutions across 37 states or then-territories, and at least 74 marked or unmarked burial sites at 65 school sites. The final-volume announcement also quotes Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland:

“The federal government – facilitated by the Department I lead – took deliberate and strategic actions through federal Indian boarding school policies to isolate children from their families, deny them their identities, and steal from them the languages, cultures and connections that are foundational to Native people.”
Why the 2022 and 2024 figures differ
The two federal announcements report different totals because they reflect different stages of the investigation. The 2022 figures were preliminary and were updated in the final volume. Use the 2024 numbers for current totals, and do not add the two sets together.

What the sources do not establish about the show
The federal record confirms the system. It does not confirm the show’s characters or its scenes. Specifically:
- The official materials do not identify the Dutton family as a specific historical family.
- They do not identify Teonna Rainwater as a documented historical person. Treat her as a fictional character unless a separate, dated source says otherwise.
- They do not verify individual plot events, episodes, or dialogue.
- They do not establish that the show’s school corresponds to a particular real institution.
A show can be built on real hardship and still invent the people who live through it. That is the normal method of historical fiction, and it is the boundary to keep in view when the series is discussed.

Consultation and representation
The official Yellowstone Podcast episode listing, featuring Mo Brings Plenty, describes a discussion of working with Taylor Sheridan on Native cultural representation, including the American Indian boarding-school storyline in 1923. The episode listing shows that cultural representation was a subject of consultation. It does not establish that the series is exhaustive, that every detail is accurate, or that the portrayal is beyond criticism. A listing is a summary, and it does not say what was changed in production.
How to discuss the show accurately
- Attribute policy claims to the Department of the Interior. Statements about removal, renaming, language suppression, and burial sites come from the federal reports, not from the series.
- Label the year of every figure. Cite 417 institutions and at least 74 burial sites at 65 school sites as the July 30, 2024 findings.
- Treat the family and its members as fiction. Do not cite the show as evidence that the Dutton family or Teonna Rainwater lived.
- Look for the real school’s own record. If a claim concerns a specific institution, check that institution’s documented history rather than the series’ depiction.
- Use survivor voices for individual experience. The Department’s Boarding School Initiative overview describes ongoing oral-history work. Survivor testimony, where available, is the appropriate source for what individual children endured.
The series is a dramatization set against documented history. The boarding-school policies it depicts were real and well documented, and the characters who suffer under them are not presented in the official record as real people.
