Yellowstone ended with its fifth season. The final episodes were the second half of Season 5, and CBS described them as the series’ last. Matthew McConaughey is not confirmed as a star of any Yellowstone sequel. An early report tied him to a sequel, but the sequel Paramount announced in 2023 had no announced cast at that time, and the follow-up series that Paramount has officially documented since then are led by other actors.
When Yellowstone ended
Yellowstone’s fifth season was released in two parts. Paramount’s official series catalog lists the premiere of the second half, labeled Season 5B, as November 10, 2024. CBS News reported that Kevin Costner would not return for those remaining episodes and framed the second half as the show’s final stretch. The Associated Press had already reported in November 2023 that the last episodes had been pushed back to November 2024.
For readers searching for a clear end point: the series concluded with the Season 5B episodes, and no later season of the original show has been announced in the sources reviewed.
Is Matthew McConaughey in a Yellowstone sequel?
Not on the official record. The headline claim that McConaughey is set to star in a sequel traces to early reporting. The Associated Press report from November 2023 said Paramount had announced a sequel then called 2024, but it also said casting had not been revealed. None of the official Paramount materials reviewed names McConaughey as a cast member of that project or of any later Yellowstone-franchise series.

No direct quotation from McConaughey, a Paramount executive, or another named decision-maker confirms his involvement. Until an official announcement names him, treat the casting as unconfirmed.
The Yellowstone follow-up projects
Three franchise projects are relevant. They are easy to confuse because they share the Dutton family and the same brand, but they have different leads and different documented histories.

The early sequel called 2024
Paramount’s 2023 announcement introduced a sequel under the working title 2024. Public reporting from that time gives only the title and the fact that casting was not yet available. The sources reviewed do not document whether this project became Dutton Ranch, Marshals, or something else, so it should not be assumed to be either of them.
Dutton Ranch
Paramount announced Dutton Ranch on March 23, 2026. It stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who return as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, and its story is set in Texas, where the two characters are building a new life. Paramount announced on June 24, 2026 that the series had been renewed for a second season. The sources reviewed do not state a premiere date for the first season.

Marshals
Marshals is a separate series in which Luke Grimes reprises his role as Kayce Dutton. A Paramount Press Express description from August 2026 identifies Grimes as its lead and places Kayce’s story after the Yellowstone Ranch storyline. No premiere date or season count is stated in the sources reviewed.

How to tell which Yellowstone news is official
- Check Paramount’s official series pages and catalog entries first; they document seasons, premiere listings, and cast for announced shows.
- Treat a headline cast claim as unconfirmed unless the official listing or an official announcement names the actor for that specific title.
- Match any sequel claim to a named series. Yellowstone, Dutton Ranch, Marshals, and the early 2024 project have different leads and different documented histories.
- Expect dates to change. Franchise plans and premiere schedules can shift after announcement, so recheck official pages before relying on a date.
Sources cited in this article are Paramount’s official series catalog, CBS News, the Associated Press, and Paramount Press Express, as described above.
