To follow the Dutton family story in chronological order, watch 1883, then 1923, then Yellowstone, then Marshals, then Dutton Ranch. To watch in the order the shows were released, start with Yellowstone (2018), then 1883 (2021), 1923 (2022), Marshals (2026), and Dutton Ranch (2026). Paramount+ says no order is required, because each series is built to work as a standalone story. The two orders answer different questions, so the right choice depends on what you want from a first viewing.
Two valid orders, and what each one gives you
The Yellowstone franchise is a family saga stretched across more than 140 years of Montana history, and it was not produced in that sequence. Chronological order follows the Dutton lineage from the 1880s to the present. Release order follows the path most viewers actually took, from the modern flagship back to the origin story and then forward again.
| Order | Sequence | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological (family timeline) | 1883 → 1923 → Yellowstone → Marshals → Dutton Ranch | Following how the family line passes from one generation to the next |
| Release order | Yellowstone (2018) → 1883 (2021) → 1923 (2022) → Marshals (2026) → Dutton Ranch (2026) | Experiencing the reveals and returning characters the way early audiences did |
Chronological order: the Dutton family timeline
If you want the family history to unfold in the order events happened, start with the two prequels, then move to the flagship, and finish with the two sequels.
1. 1883
James and Margaret Dutton lead their family west from Texas in the late nineteenth century and settle in Montana, where the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch will eventually be established. This is the starting point of the Dutton story.

2. 1923
The series moves the family into the early twentieth century. Jacob Dutton, James’s brother, and his wife Cara are running the ranch, and Spencer Dutton, James and Margaret’s youngest son, has been raised by Jacob and Cara. The lineage runs forward through Spencer and his wife Alexandra to their son, John Dutton II.
3. Yellowstone
The flagship follows John Dutton III, a descendant of the earlier generations, and his struggle to hold on to the Montana ranch. Yellowstone ran for five seasons, and it is the show most viewers mean when they say “the Dutton family.” Watching it third in chronological order means you already know the ancestors who built the land, which changes how its conflicts land.
4. Marshals
Marshals continues the story with John Dutton’s son, Kayce, who leaves ranch life to join an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. The format leans toward law-enforcement procedural drama rather than the ranch-centred family conflict of the earlier series.
5. Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch follows Beth Dutton and her husband Rip Wheeler as they try to build a future in South Texas. It is the most recent entry in the core Dutton run and returns the family’s story to the Texas setting where 1883 began.

Release order: how the franchise was first seen
Release order is the sequence Paramount+ lists for the franchise: Yellowstone (2018), 1883 (2021), 1923 (2022), Marshals (2026), and Dutton Ranch (2026). Starting with the flagship means the origin story arrives as a backstory, which is how many viewers encountered the family. The trade-off is that the early Yellowstone seasons introduce relationships that 1883 and 1923 later explain in detail, so some reveals will land differently in each order.
Is there a required order?
No. Paramount+ states that each series is designed to work as a standalone story. The platform’s contributor, Stephanie Hartsell, puts it this way: “Each series is designed to work as a standalone story, so there’s no required viewing order.” Neither order is wrong; chronology simply makes the lineage easier to track, and release order preserves the way the story was originally revealed.
Shows that are not part of the Dutton order
The phrase “Taylor Sheridan shows” covers a broader slate of series than the Dutton family saga. Two frequently mentioned titles should be kept out of a Dutton timeline.
The Madison
The Madison premiered on March 14, 2026, and its first season has six episodes. Paramount+ says its central Clyburn family is not connected to the Duttons or the Dutton family tree. It can belong on a broader Sheridan watchlist, but it does not belong in the Dutton order.
Rank #3
- Includes all 53 episodes and over 19 hours of special features, with interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves
Lawmen: Bass Reeves is a standalone anthology series. Taylor Sheridan is an executive producer, but that credit does not make the show part of the Dutton lineage, so it does not slot between any of the five titles above.

Streaming is split across two Paramount services in the U.S., so a chronological rewatch may involve more than one subscription. Availability is geography- and date-sensitive, and listings outside the U.S. may differ, so check your local guide before you start.
| Series | U.S. availability listed by Paramount+ (October 8, 2026) |
|---|---|
| 1883 | Paramount+ |

| Yellowstone | Peacock (streaming) and Paramount Network (scheduled reruns) |
| Marshals | Paramount+; airs on CBS |
| Dutton Ranch | Paramount+; also airs on Paramount Network |
Paramount+ and Paramount Network are different services. Because Yellowstone is on Peacock, a viewer following the chronological order will need access to both Paramount+ and Peacock.
Quick Recap
Choosing your order
- Choose chronological order if you want to follow the family line, see how the land was first claimed, and understand the ancestry behind John Dutton III.
- Choose release order if you want the flagship’s mysteries and character introductions to arrive first, the way early audiences saw them.
- Choose whichever order matches your patience for backstory. Both paths cover the same five core titles, and neither requires prior viewing of the others.
