Spoiler warning: this guide covers Yellowjackets through the Season 3 finale.
The short answer: the cult and its symbol are the series’ way of examining how belief systems form under pressure, how authority takes hold, and how trauma outlasts survival. The show does not give the symbol a single confirmed origin, and it does not establish that the wilderness acts on events through supernatural means. Its creators have said they want those questions to stay open. Paramount’s official description frames the series as “Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama” about high-school soccer players who survive a plane crash in remote northern wilderness.

What the symbol is and what the show confirms about it
The symbol is the series’ most visible link between the wilderness timeline and the present-day group led by Lottie. It appears on pendants worn by her followers, and viewers quickly learn to read it as a recurring mark rather than a decoration. Viewers often call it a “rune symbol,” though the series itself does not settle what kind of mark it is.
Simone Kessell, the actor who plays Lottie, told Harper’s Bazaar in April 2023 that the symbol appears on the followers’ pendants and that the acolytes never explain it aloud. The result is an asymmetry: the audience can see that the symbol matters, while the characters who wear it do not discuss what it means. So if you are asking whether the acolytes know the meaning of the symbol on their pendants, the show’s own presentation points to no shared explanation inside the group.
#1 Best Overall
Several things are not established by the sources behind this guide. They do not say who first created the symbol, what each line of it means, or whether it has any objective supernatural effect. Any single answer to those questions is a fan theory until the series itself establishes it.
Why Lottie’s community works as a story device
“Cult” is a useful shorthand for Lottie’s present-day group, but it is a viewer’s label rather than a diagnosis, and the show does not use it as a clinical term. The more precise way to read the group is through its visual and behavioral echoes of the wilderness years. The same kinds of rituals, hierarchy and shared markers that formed under survival conditions reappear in Lottie’s adult life.
Kessell’s reading, offered as an actor’s interpretation rather than canon, is that Lottie is trying to self-soothe by recapturing parts of that past, especially its sense of comfort and control. In her account, Lottie believes she has a gift for helping people, and she uses that belief to build a world in which she feels at ease. The symbol is part of how she makes her teachings resonate with followers. It works as a shared marker and as a source of Lottie’s authority, not as proof that the group holds a settled doctrine about where the symbol came from.
The Antler Queen and the ritual
The Antler Queen is an image of authority within the wilderness group and a bridge to the later cult imagery. Ashley Lyle, co-creator and showrunner, told Entertainment Tonight in 2022 that the writers needed to earn the journey from the girls in the pilot to the Antler Queen presiding over a ritual cannibal feast. In that framing, the ritual is the consequence of tragedy, not evidence of a supernatural cause.

Keep two figures apart when you discuss the Antler Queen. The character seen in the pilot is one mystery, and later leadership changes and later revelations are another. Viewers often conflate them, and the creators’ interviews do not treat them as one question. The costume is best read as a sign of the group’s emerging ritual order and the extremity of its survival world, not as a literal spirit or deity.
What the Season 3 finale settled, and what it did not
In an April 11, 2025 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lyle said: “It’s safe to say we have definitively answered who Pit Girl is.” That is the clearest story-status claim in the sources behind this guide.
The same interview does not say that the pilot’s Antler Queen mystery has been fully explained, and it does not say that the symbol’s origin has been settled. Treat those as open unless a later episode or official statement addresses them directly. The sources used here do not cover developments after April 2025.
Is the wilderness supernatural? The creators’ answer
The creators have deliberately left room for more than one reading, and they have explained why. In a January 2022 Vanity Fair interview, Bart Nickerson, co-creator and showrunner, said: “If magic is real, I think it has to not violate the laws of physics.” Lyle described her own taste in horror, saying she wants some events to remain open to interpretation, which is why the show tries to keep “a little bit of a rational parachute for everything.”

Jonathan Lisco, co-showrunner, made the adjacent point that matters most for the cult storyline. He said: “And if that dread is being created by neurotransmitters or mental stressors or your own psychosis, what’s the difference? It’s just as real in some ways as if an actual monster were to come out of the woods.” Dread that is felt as real can shape choices and relationships whether or not anything external is acting on the characters.
That gives you the right frame for the question readers ask about Lottie and the bear. The sources behind this guide do not resolve that specific scene, so the only guidance available is the creators’ general stance: the show keeps a rational reading open. Avoid stating that the wilderness is definitely real, or that everything happens only in the characters’ heads. Both are stronger claims than the series supports.
Trauma: the question the pilot asks
In the same April 2025 interview, Lyle said the question posed in the pilot is: “Can they put the past behind them?” She said the story has shown this may not be possible in the way the women hoped, and she stressed that each survivor responds differently. Nickerson described the survival adaptations the characters developed as potentially useful in dangerous circumstances but hard to leave behind once ordinary life resumes.
Use this as a thematic lens, not a clinical explanation of any character. The series depicts trauma through behavior and conflict, and the interviews do not support diagnosing characters or viewers.

How to weigh the competing readings
Two genuine readings of the wilderness events are in circulation. The table compares them along the axes that matter most for interpretation.
| Axis | Supernatural reading | Grounded reading |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence source | What the episode depicts, taken as literal | What a character believes, or what the episode depicts under the stress of survival |
| Causal account | Supernatural agency acts on the events | Ordinary physical events shaped by fear, chance and group behavior |
| Narrative function of symbol and ritual | The symbol or ritual literally causes events | The symbol and ritual give characters a shared structure for interpreting events |
| Certainty | Not confirmed by the creators | Not confirmed by the creators; the creators say they want it left open |
The creator interviews support keeping this uncertainty rather than choosing one supernatural explanation. Nothing in the cited sources confirms the supernatural reading, and nothing rules it out. Where the table says “not confirmed,” that is the most accurate status the series currently offers.
