Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSpoilers for all of You Season 1. Joe Goldberg’s narration makes his fixation on Beck sound like devotion, but the season shows it for what it is: stalking, coercion, and violence. Beck discovers the evidence, escapes Joe’s cage, and reaches a locked door—but the four-month time jump confirms she is dead. Joe appears to have avoided punishment until Candace walks into the bookstore.
How Joe’s fixation on Beck begins
Joe meets aspiring writer Guinevere Beck at the bookstore where he works. He searches for her online, follows her, enters her apartment, and steals her phone. He casts these invasions as ways of protecting someone he barely knows; in practice, he is monitoring and controlling her without her consent.
That gap between Joe’s self-justifying narration and what he actually does is central to the season. He treats ordinary setbacks as permission to interfere with Beck’s life and harm the people around her.
Who Joe kills—and how he hides it
Benji
Joe traps Benji in the bookstore’s basement and kills him. He hides the evidence while continuing to shape Beck’s understanding of what is happening around her.

Peach
Joe grows jealous of Beck’s friend Peach. After trying to push Peach out of Beck’s life, he kills her and disguises her death as suicide. The pattern is not protection: Joe removes people he sees as obstacles, then manipulates the story Beck is told about them.
Why Beck trusts Joe again
Joe and Beck break up, reconnect, and resume their relationship. As Beck begins investigating Joe’s past, including his relationship with Candace, he gives her false explanations. He also tells her about the abuse he suffered as a child at the hands of bookstore owner Mr. Mooney.

Joe’s childhood trauma is part of his history, not an excuse for what he chooses to do. The season shows him using disclosure to regain Beck’s trust while concealing his own actions.
What Beck finds in Joe’s box
Paco tells Beck that Joe hides things above the bathroom ceiling. She checks and finds a box of incriminating objects: her stolen phone and diary, phones belonging to Benji and Peach, and other evidence. The contents make clear that Joe has been watching her and give her a concrete reason to fear him.

What happens in the cage at the end
Joe takes Beck to the bookbinding cage in the bookstore basement and tries to impose his version of events on her. Beck writes an account intended to protect herself and persuade Joe to let her go. She stabs him with a typewriter part and gets out of the cage, but the basement door is locked.
Paco hears Beck at the door and turns away, choosing loyalty to Joe over helping her. Joe gets out of the cage with a spare key. The episode cuts away before showing Beck’s fate, so the basement scene itself leaves the immediate outcome unresolved.

What the time jump confirms—and why Candace returns
Four months later, the uncertainty is over: Beck is dead. Joe has had her manuscript published, while Dr. Nicky has been blamed for Joe’s crimes. Joe is still working at the bookstore and appears to have escaped consequences.
Then Candace, Joe’s former girlfriend, walks into the store. Her appearance does not mean Beck survived; Beck’s death has already been confirmed. Instead, Candace’s return unsettles Joe’s apparent clean slate and sets up the next chapter of the story.
