India shaped Yehudi Menuhin’s musical outlook through his encounters with Indian classical music and his friendship with sitarist Ravi Shankar. Their relationship grew into a celebrated artistic collaboration, including the 1967 album West Meets East. It was one meaningful influence on Menuhin’s life—not the sole explanation for his work.
Why India mattered to Menuhin’s musical outlook
Menuhin was an American violinist whose artistic life extended across traditions and cultures. His connection with India is especially visible in his relationship with Ravi Shankar, whose musicianship and approach to art he admired. The story is best understood through those documented encounters and their subsequent work together, rather than as a claim that India alone defined Menuhin’s career.
Menuhin’s official centenary archive records that he was born in New York and died in Berlin in 1999. His birth centenary was marked in 2016. Menuhin centenary archive.
How Menuhin and Ravi Shankar met
A 2016 Scroll.in feature reports that Menuhin and Shankar briefly met in Paris in 1932. It also says they were introduced in India during Menuhin’s 1952 visit. So India was a consequential setting for their relationship, but the 1952 introduction was not their first encounter. Scroll.in’s 2016 account.

From friendship to West Meets East
Their collaboration reached a wide audience with West Meets East, released in 1967. The album brought Menuhin’s violin and Shankar’s sitar into a shared musical project. The title points to an exchange between artists and traditions; it should not be taken to mean that either tradition is a single, uniform sound or that one is being ranked above the other.
In 2016, Warner Classics announced a vinyl reissue for Menuhin’s centenary year. That announcement documents the album’s renewed presentation at the time; it does not establish whether a particular edition is currently available. Warner Classics’ announcement.

A collaboration heard beyond the album
The United Nations archive identifies a 1967 appearance by Menuhin and Shankar at the General Assembly Hall. The performance placed their partnership in a public, international setting as well as on record. United Nations Web TV archive.
The cultural meaning of their work was also recognized in India. In a 7 March 2013 speech presenting the Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony to Shankar, President Pranab Mukherjee said: “His work with the great Yehudi Menuhin transcended faiths, regions and cultures.” President of India, 7 March 2013.

What Menuhin admired in Shankar
An archived 7 March 2013 speech by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh quoted Menuhin reflecting on Shankar as a teacher and artist. Menuhin’s words, as reproduced in the speech, were: “As a teacher, I know of no better. His total commitment to his art goes far beyond pure music making. For Ravi, all human activity, eating, dancing, doing exercise, is imbued with a symbolic value beyond approach, and therefore it is all, in its own way, like some divine offering”. The quotation conveys Menuhin’s regard for Shankar’s understanding of music as connected to a wider discipline of life. Archived Prime Minister of India speech, 7 March 2013.
