Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAfter Microsoft announced layoffs affecting about 9,000 employees in July 2025, Xbox Game Studios Publishing executive producer Matt Turnbull suggested that workers facing job loss could use AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for career planning and emotional reframing. The advice drew criticism, and Turnbull’s LinkedIn post was deleted.
What did Matt Turnbull say?
Turnbull’s LinkedIn post, as reproduced by Engadget and Fast Company, opened: “These are really challenging times, and if you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone and you don’t have to go it alone.”
He said he had been experimenting with large language model tools, including ChatGPT and Copilot, to reduce what he called the “emotional and cognitive load” of job loss. The examples in the post suggested using AI to help rebuild a career plan, adapt résumé or LinkedIn copy, draft messages to professional contacts, and reframe feelings of impostor syndrome.
Turnbull also wrote: “No AI tool is a replacement for your voice or your lived experience. But at a time when mental energy is scarce, these tools can help get you unstuck faster, calmer, and with more clarity.” That is his stated view of the tools, not evidence that they reduce distress or provide mental-health treatment.

Why did the advice draw backlash?
The post appeared in the immediate aftermath of Microsoft’s July 2025 layoffs, which contemporaneous coverage described as affecting about 9,000 employees. The approximate figure was reported at the time; it should not be read as a final verified total. TechRadar’s coverage and other reports connected the reaction to that context: a company was cutting jobs while an executive producer suggested AI as a way for people to navigate job loss.
That juxtaposition struck many readers as insensitive. The reporting establishes the timing and the criticism, but it does not show that AI caused these layoffs or confirm Turnbull’s full intent. The original LinkedIn post is no longer available, so its wording is known through contemporaneous outlets that reproduced or quoted it.
