For a rewatch built around story eras, use the 14-film chronological sequence below, which opens with X-Men: First Class and closes with Logan. Treat that sequence as a practical viewing route, not a settled continuity. The films use flashbacks, parallel periods and revised timelines, and no single list can make them fit neatly.
Which order to choose
- First watch or casual rewatch: use release order. JustWatch’s US guide calls it the less confusing route for newcomers, because the story unfolds as audiences first met it, and the time-travel reset lands as a reveal rather than a puzzle to solve in advance. - Story-era rewatch: use chronological order and read it as a sequence of decades. Expect to see the seams between films, and treat them as part of the experience.
- Only the core team films: both lists include the Wolverine and Deadpool spin-offs and The New Mutants. If you want to leave those out, drop those titles and keep the remaining order as listed.
The chronological sequence
The table gives each film’s release year and the story years stated by the cited guides. “Not stated” means those guides do not assign the film a story year, so its position reflects the sequence rather than a dated in-universe event.

The sequence follows JustWatch’s chronology (JustWatch). Release years come from TheWrap’s release list (TheWrap, How to Watch the X-Men Movies in Chronological Order). Disney Brazil’s Portuguese-language guide presents a similar release and chronological pair, with the same caveats (Disney Brazil, Em que ordem assistir aos filmes dos X-Men).
Why the chronological order stays approximate
Days of Future Past is the hinge
The official studio listing describes the film as an ensemble across two time periods. Its synopsis reads: “The beloved characters from the original ‘X-Men’ film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from the past, ‘X-Men: First Class,’ in order to change a major historical event and fight in an epic battle that could save our future.” (20th Century Studios, X-Men: Days of Future Past) Because the film moves between a 1973 strand and a future strand, no single year can place it cleanly, and Disney Brazil’s guide treats it as a two-period story for that reason.

The timeline has been split and contradicts itself
TheWrap describes Days of Future Past as creating divergent paths and notes that the franchise’s chronology contains contradictions (TheWrap). A chronological list therefore shows one reading of the films, not a universally agreed sequence. Viewers who expect every later event to sit on one continuous line will find that expectation unmet.
Flashbacks move the story years
Two films open well before their main story. X-Men Origins: Wolverine begins in the 19th century but its principal story is dated to 1979. X-Men: First Class has an earlier opening before its main 1962 story. Disney Brazil’s guide draws this distinction (Disney Brazil), which is why the table lists a main story year rather than the first image on screen.

Two Phoenix stories overlap
Disney Brazil notes that X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Dark Phoenix both tell versions of the Phoenix story. Placing them in sequence smooths over that overlap; it does not resolve it.
Some positions are conventions, not dated events
The cited guides do not give Deadpool, Deadpool 2, The New Mutants or Deadpool & Wolverine a precise in-universe year. Their places in the table follow the guides’ grouping, so treat them as a practical reading rather than a dated story fact.

Release order
For the cleanest first viewing, watch the films in the order they were released. This is the list TheWrap publishes, and it matches JustWatch’s recommendation for newcomers.

JustWatch lists DVD and Blu-ray purchase formats for individual films. The cited guides do not confirm a single disc set covering all 14 films, so check title coverage, region and format on the current listing before buying a collection.
