Sony’s official FAQ for the film identifies her by that name and describes her as a misguided young girl with telepathic powers. In the film, those powers let her move her consciousness into other people and control their bodies.
Who the movie’s Jean Grey is
Sony’s official FAQ presents Jean as a young character rather than an adult mentor figure. She arrives in New York with psychic abilities that go beyond reading minds: she can transfer her consciousness into another person and take over that person’s body. That ability is the feature the film builds its early conflict around.
Why she comes to New York
According to the same FAQ, Jean is in the city looking for answers about her older sister, Sara. That search is her stated reason for being there, and it is the thread that connects her to the wider story.

Jean first appears to be a dangerous adversary for Spider-Man. Sony’s FAQ says Peter Parker then uncovers information that changes how he sees the situation, so the character is not a straightforward villain from start to finish.
Sony’s official synopsis places this inside a larger premise: Peter Parker is fighting crime full-time in a world that has forgotten him, and an uncontrolled change and a hidden threat put the city and the people he loves at risk. The synopsis credits Destin Daniel Cretton as director and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers as writers.

How the character was added during development
In a Motion Picture Association interview published in The Credits, screenwriter Chris McKenna explains that Jean was not part of the early plan for the villain role. He says, “We didn’t get Jean Grey as our villain until after Destin came on.” He also calls her “the missing piece that we needed desperately” and says that her journey works as a mirror and foil to Peter Parker’s. Those are his descriptions of the character’s function in the script, and they fit the FAQ’s account of a character who starts as an opponent and then complicates Peter’s view.
McKenna also said that bringing Jean on and developing her backstory suited both Cretton and the writers. That is the most direct statement in the sources about why the character was added, though it does not explain the specific creative decisions behind her arc.

How she differs from the comic-book character
Jean Grey is an established X-Men character in comic books. GamesRadar’s explainer reports that the film version differs from the original comics. For this movie, the more reliable guide to the character is the official FAQ and the screenwriters’ interview, which describe a younger, story-specific version with the body-control ability shown above. Readers who want the comic history should treat that as background rather than a description of the film character.
