Wrath of the Titans (2012) is worth watching if you want large-scale mythological destruction and are willing to accept thin characters and an uneven mix of comedy and drama. Contemporary critics found the spectacle the film’s strongest asset and its characterization and tonal control its weakest. This is a scripted fantasy action film, not a documentary, so the review below judges it as a feature.

Premise: a reluctant hero pulled back in
The film picks up with Perseus, played by Sam Worthington, living as a fisherman and raising his 10-year-old son, Helius. He has deliberately stepped away from the heroics of the previous film. The story then places him in the middle of a conflict between the Olympian gods and the Titans held in Tartarus.

The gods are weakened because humanity has withdrawn its devotion, and they are losing control over Kronos and the Titans imprisoned below. That setup gives the film its central engine: a world-threatening escape, with Perseus pushed back into the role of warrior. The plot is organized around that escalation rather than around any deep character arc, which is the main point critics raised.

How the critics read it
The most detailed contemporary professional review available is Brent Simon’s notice for Screen Daily, published March 28, 2012, two days before the release: Screen Daily’s review of Wrath of the Titans. It is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus verdict, but it identifies the film’s main tensions clearly.
Spectacle: the film’s strongest asset
Simon saw a director able to stage destructive action on a striking scale, and he singled out the large-scale destruction of the landscape as the film’s strongest element. If you watch for set pieces, this is the reason to watch. The 3D formats are built for exactly this kind of scene, and the spectacle is the part of the film that most reviewers treated as delivering on its promise.

Characterization: thin where it matters
The same review found the characters thin. Perseus carries the emotional weight of the story, but the film gives him less interior development than its premise invites. Supporting figures and the family thread around Helius are present, but they do little to deepen the stakes between the big sequences. Viewers who come for relationships and dialogue are likely to feel this gap most.
Tone: comedy that does not sit comfortably
Simon also judged that Bill Nighy’s comic relief is tonally out of step with the rest of the film. The issue is less that the jokes are unfunny than that they seem to belong to a different movie from the grim, world-ending conflict around them. Whether this bothers you depends on whether you read the humor as welcome relief or as a lurch in register. The film does not resolve that tension cleanly.

Adaptation: a deliberate break from the myths
Wrath of the Titans is not a faithful retelling of Greek myth, and its lead actor said so openly. In a NOW Toronto interview published March 29, 2012, Sam Worthington described the filmmakers’ approach this way: “I like the fact that we’re mining this world to create our own mythology, to create our own canon of stories.” The quote is from the interview with Norman Wilner, and it is the clearest statement of intent in the press material: the NOW Toronto interview with Sam Worthington.
That framing matters for judging the film. If you expect a close adaptation of the Perseus and Kronos stories, you will find a loose reinterpretation built for action. If you accept it as an invented mythology that borrows names and settings, the freedom is part of the appeal.

Is it worth your time?
Use this checklist to decide:
- Watch it if you want big, readable action, destruction on a landscape scale, and a 3D presentation designed for it.
- Watch it if you are following the franchise from Clash of the Titans and want the continuation of Perseus’s story.
- Skip it if you need strong character writing or a consistent tone from scene to scene.
- Skip it if you expect faithful mythology; the film openly builds its own version.
Read that checklist against the one critical review cited here. The verdict is a single contemporary assessment, and your own reaction to the spectacle-versus-character trade-off is the variable that will decide it.
Watching it at home
Warner Home Video’s home-video release was reported by Animation World Network in May 2012, so physical Blu-ray and DVD editions exist. The reporting does not confirm current stock, edition contents or pricing, so check the retailer’s listing directly before buying or renting, and confirm that the edition you choose includes the format you want.
