The best-documented WWE departures linked to conflict with Vince McMahon or management are CM Punk’s 2014 exit and the 2022 walkout by Sasha Banks, now Mercedes Moné, and Naomi, now Trinity. Their accounts point to different circumstances, and the available evidence does not establish a complete list of wrestlers who left because of McMahon. In particular, the 2022 walkout involved broader workplace and creative disagreements, not a single publicly established cause.
Which wrestlers left WWE amid conflict with McMahon or management?
CM Punk described injuries and frustration with WWE’s response to his requests as major factors in his 2014 departure. In 2022, Sasha Banks and Naomi walked out of a live episode of Raw; Mercedes Moné, Banks’s later ring name, subsequently cited multiple reasons, including how she was spoken to and her wish to take control of her career. Those are distinct cases: Punk’s account concerns his departure and later termination, while Banks and Naomi’s was a joint walkout amid disagreements at work.
These accounts support discussion of departures associated with conflict, but they do not prove that McMahon alone caused either exit. The evidence also does not provide an exhaustive roster-wide tally.
Why did Sasha Banks and Naomi walk out of WWE?
WWE’s account of the May 16, 2022 walkout
In its contemporaneous statement, WWE said Banks and Naomi had been informed they would be in that night’s Raw main event. The company said they entered talent-relations head John Laurinaitis’s office with their bags, left their tag-team titles on his desk, and walked out. WWE said the wrestlers told the company they did not feel respected enough as tag-team champions and were uncomfortable with the planned match. The statement also said: “Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their contract.” This is WWE’s framing of the dispute, not an independent finding about what happened or why. Mercedes Moné’s later explanation
In a 2024 interview, Moné said there were “so many reasons” for leaving. She described listening to her heart and soul, said something felt wrong that day, and recalled that the way they were spoken to “didn’t settle in my heart.” She also spoke about wanting control of her life and career. Watch the interview.
In another interview, Moné said, “I left for many different reasons,” and that she did not like how McMahon spoke to her or how she was talked down to. The report identifies him as WWE’s chairman at the time and quotes her saying, “We went to everybody.” Her comments directly connect some of her dissatisfaction to McMahon, while also making clear that she described multiple reasons rather than one simple cause. Naomi’s account
Naomi later described “a lot that happened that day at work that led us to leave…like literally walk out.” A 2025 report also noted that WWE creative team member Ed Koskey described different creative and talent-relations leadership at the time. These comments add context, but they do not provide a complete account of the meeting or settle every disputed detail. Read the report.
Why did CM Punk leave WWE?
In his 2014 appearance on Colt Cabana’s podcast, as reported by Wrestling Inc., Punk described injuries—including broken ribs and a concussion—as a major reason he left after the Royal Rumble. He also said he was frustrated that WWE asked him to handle visa and drug-testing matters rather than address his requests for help. Punk said WWE later terminated him, so his account is not simply that he quit. These are Punk’s reported claims, not independently verified medical or employment findings; his explanation involves several grievances, not one issue alone. Read Wrestling Inc.’s report.

Did every wrestler who left during McMahon’s leadership leave because of him?
No. A departure during a particular executive’s tenure does not, by itself, establish that the executive caused it. Layla’s WWE-published 2015 interview offers a clear example: she said she chose retirement because she was ready for a new phase of life, tired of travel, and finding recovery took longer as she got older. Her stated reasons were personal and career-related, not a claim that McMahon drove her out. Read Layla’s interview.
For the cases covered here, the distinction matters: Moné explicitly cited how McMahon spoke to her among several reasons; WWE and Naomi described the 2022 events from different perspectives; and Punk’s account focused on injury and disputes with WWE over support and other matters. The available sources do not show that these accounts share one motive or establish a definitive list of McMahon-caused departures.
