Mexican wrestler and trainer Rey Misterio Sr.—born Miguel Ángel López Díaz—died on December 20, 2024, at a reported age of 66. His son announced his death, and Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide confirmed it. Reports did not disclose a cause of death. Misterio Sr. was known both for his own career, which began in 1976, and for helping train a generation of wrestlers in Tijuana.
Who was Rey Misterio Sr.?
Rey Misterio Sr. was the ring name of Miguel Ángel López Díaz, a Mexican professional wrestler and trainer from Tijuana, Baja California. He was the uncle of Rey Misterio Jr., the wrestler more widely styled Rey Mysterio in WWE coverage. The two are distinct figures: this obituary concerns the elder Misterio, not his nephew.
Did Rey Misterio Sr. die, and how old was he?
Yes. His son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio, announced the death on December 20, 2024, and AAA confirmed it. La Jornada reported that Misterio Sr. was 66; Univision also covered the announcement and noted that no cause of death had been made public at the time. The family announcement, as reported by La Jornada, gave no further details. La Jornada’s December 20 report and Univision’s report covered the news contemporaneously.
There is an unresolved inconsistency in La Jornada’s December 21 coverage: it describes him as 66 but also gives a birth date of January 8, 1950, which does not match that age at his death in December 2024. The reviewed reports do not resolve the discrepancy, so the reported age is best treated as the contemporary figure rather than a basis for asserting a birth year or exact birth date. La Jornada’s December 21 article also reproduced AAA’s condolence: “Enviamos nuestro más sincero pésame a sus seres queridos y elevamos nuestras oraciones al cielo por su eterno descanso.”

Career milestones: from debut to Starrcade
Professional debut in 1976
La Jornada reported that Misterio Sr. made his professional wrestling debut on January 6, 1976. That date marks the start of a career that would connect him to Mexican wrestling both in the ring and in the training gym.
A 1990 appearance at WCW Starrcade
In 1990, Misterio Sr. and Konnan represented Mexico at WCW’s Starrcade. According to La Jornada, they won their first-round match before losing in the second phase to The Steiner Brothers. The account places Misterio Sr. in an international event while keeping the result precise: his team advanced past the opening round but did not win the tournament.

His influence as a trainer in Tijuana
In 1987, Misterio Sr. helped open a wrestling gym with Negro Casas and Súper Astro, La Jornada reported. Its trainees included Konnan, Psicosis, Damián 666, Halloween, and his nephew, Rey Misterio Jr. That training legacy is a central part of Misterio Sr.’s significance: his contribution extended beyond his own matches to wrestlers who went on to build careers of their own.

Misterio Sr.’s story brings together two strands of lucha libre history: a career that began in the 1970s and a Tijuana gym that helped prepare later performers. In a 2021 interview quoted by Univision, he described the appeal of wearing a mask: “Me sentía como en otro plano, no sé… Entre menos gente sepa quién eres, mucho mejor” (“I felt as if I were on another plane, I don’t know… The fewer people who know who you are, the better”). The remark offers a glimpse of his perspective on the mask’s separation between a wrestler’s public identity and private self.
