The Voltage DaVinci is an electric guitar developed by Cream Guitars with E Ink, using E Ink Prism 3 ePaper to change the look of its surface among seven colors. The companies called it the “world’s first color-changing guitar” when they announced it in January 2025; that is their claim, not an independently verified historical first.
What is the color-changing guitar called?
It is the Cream Guitars Voltage DaVinci. E Ink and Cream announced the collaboration on January 28, 2025, and said the guitar was showcased at NAMM 2025. Their announcement identifies E Ink Prism 3 ePaper as the technology integrated into the instrument and describes a seven-color display. Read E Ink’s announcement.
The “world’s first” wording comes from the companies. The announcement establishes what the partners said about their product, but does not itself establish a comprehensive history of earlier guitars or other instruments.
How does the E Ink guitar change color?
The Voltage DaVinci incorporates E Ink Prism 3 ePaper across its visible surface so that it can display different colors. Cream’s current product page says a companion app controls the display. The public product information describes seven colors, but does not provide independently measured switching speed, battery life, or durability results.

What are the production model’s listed features?
Cream’s current product page describes a revised production design and lists Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups and six-position switching, in addition to the color display and companion app. These are maker-provided specifications, not findings from an independent test or review. See Cream Guitars’ product page.
The design was presented as an attempt to make an electric guitar visually configurable as well as playable. Cream CEO Luis Ortiz said, “We had the idea to break all the rules of the traditional guitar,” and described the redesign as broadening and enhancing the playing experience. Those remarks are the company’s rationale, not an independent assessment of the instrument’s sound or performance.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell you
The launch announcement and product page establish the technology, the partners’ seven-color claim, and Cream’s current listed specifications and production information. They do not establish how the guitar sounds compared with conventional electric guitars, how well the display holds up through extended use, or whether it offers a performance advantage. E Ink executive Pete Valianatos called the project an instrument that “makes a visual statement as powerful as their music”; that is a partner representative’s promotional description, not a test result.
