The scene never says they are married, but most viewers read the rings as a marriage, and that reading is what makes the ending land as queer in a franchise built around duels for a bride-to-be’s hand. Whether the show intended that reading is a separate question, and the answer is more complicated than the rings alone suggest.
What the finale shows and what it leaves unsaid
Readers often treat the finale’s meaning as a single claim, so it helps to separate three layers. Each one carries a different level of evidence.
| Layer | What it contains | How firm the evidence is |
|---|---|---|
| What the finale visibly shows | Suletta and Miorine wearing matching rings in the final scenes | Direct: this is on screen |
| What the finale explicitly says | No dialogue states that the two are married | Direct: the absence is noted in a 2025 academic dissertation |
| What later commentary says | The dissertation reports that later creative interviews confirmed the marriage | Secondary: reported by the dissertation; the original interviews are not reproduced here |
The gap between the first and second rows is where most of the debate sits. A viewer who reads the rings as a wedding band is interpreting an image, not a line of dialogue. That is a legitimate reading, and the dissertation supports it by pointing to how the relationship develops across the season, but it remains an interpretation.
Why the bridegroom premise matters
The show’s setting makes the ending more pointed than it would be in a conventional mecha story. The official synopsis for episode 17 says Miorine’s seventeenth birthday is approaching and describes a duel that will determine her bridegroom. The series therefore builds a relationship-selection contest into its school premise from the start.

The official synopsis for episode 18 then describes Suletta losing both Miorine and Aerial, the mobile suit tied to her story. Placing the two losses side by side shows that the emotional stakes are not separate from the franchise’s mecha storytelling. The show does not claim that a pilot’s bond and a machine are the same thing, but it does make both central to the same arc.
What the sources do not establish is that the series’ creators set out to subvert a particular Gundam convention. The premise is documented; the intent behind reworking it is not. Readers should treat the claim that the ending is “queer as hell” as an editorial reading of the narrative structure, not as a statement from the production.

Reading the rings as a marriage
The dissertation describes the matching rings as the central visual evidence. Its author argues that, taken together with the couple’s developing relationship, the imagery indicates the two have married off-screen. The scene itself does not state the marriage outright, which is why the reading depends on how a viewer weighs the image against the rest of the story.
That gap matters for how the ending is discussed. The finale can be read as a resolution that carries the couple past implication for viewers who recognize what the rings mean. It does not follow that the show spelled the relationship out in its own words, and an article that claims it did would be overstating the evidence.

The magazine edit and the question of explicitness
The clearest sign that the relationship’s label has been contested comes from outside the episodes. According to the dissertation, a late-July 2023 interview with voice actors in a magazine used the phrase “married couple” for Suletta and Miorine. The digital version of that interview was later edited to remove the phrase.
The dissertation reports that the rights holder, Bandai Namco Filmworks, explained the edit by saying it wanted interpretation left to each viewer’s perspective. The author argues that fans read the change as an attempt to control or erase the show’s queerness. The original interview, the edit notice, and the later creative interview are not reproduced here, so this account rests on the dissertation’s description of them.

The reported dispute concerns wording in a digital magazine interview. It does not establish that the animated finale was altered.

Lynn, who voices Miorine, posted a comment on the official site dated 2023-07-02. In Japanese, the key line reads: 「自立することは孤独とは違いますし、手を取り合って進むことが重要なんだと。」 An editorial translation, not a published English version, would be: “Being independent is different from being lonely, and it is important to join hands and move forward.”

Lynn said she was glad the finale delivered the smiles the characters had been hoping for. She also said it did not pretend every conflict had been neatly resolved. Her emphasis on independence and joining hands gives a reading of the ending as interdependence rather than a simple happy wedding. That is the performer’s own response to the work, not a statement of the creators’ intent, and it does not settle how the marriage should be understood.
Two ways to read the ending
- As emotional closure: the rings and the couple’s shared final moment resolve a story that began with a forced bridegroom contest. Viewers who read the marriage as settled see the finale as a clear happy ending.
- As unresolved aftermath: the political and personal conflicts the series raised are not fully erased. The cast comment’s emphasis on moving forward rather than arriving suggests a more open ending, one in which the relationship is an ongoing choice.
Both readings draw on the same finale. The queer reading does not require choosing one over the other, but it does depend on taking the rings as meaningful, which is the interpretive step this article has tried to make visible.
How to check a claim about the ending
- Separate what is on screen (the rings) from what is said in dialogue (no explicit statement of marriage).
- Check the official series pages for episode synopses before relying on secondhand descriptions of the premise.
- Treat the magazine edit and the later creative interviews as reported accounts unless you can locate the original interview and edit notice yourself.
- Treat cast comments as the performer’s response, not as a ruling on the show’s canonical meaning.
The ending is a clear example of how a franchise’s own premise can make an audience’s reading more powerful than what is spelled out in the text.
