Not in the words the headline suggests. Winona Ryder has never been documented saying she “always knew” Heathers was a masterpiece, and the word “masterpiece” does not appear in the interviews reviewed for this piece. What the record does show is more specific: she fought to get the role, defended the film’s satirical intent while critics were attacking it, said in 2009 that it “totally holds up,” and has described its commercial performance as disappointing. The “flop turned masterpiece” framing is a fair editorial summary of that arc, but it is not a quotation.
What Ryder actually said about the film
The most useful place to start is Ryder’s own account from the late 1980s, when the film was new and controversial. In a March 1989 Los Angeles Times profile, Ryder described being desperate for the part. She said she felt that if she did not make the movie she would never be able to live with herself, then added a joking threat about what she would do to anyone else who took it. Those lines show how much the role meant to her, but they are about wanting the part, not about predicting the film’s reputation.
The same profile contains her defense of the film’s tone. Ryder called it “very smart” and said it was “the first time I’ve done a film I could say was really important.” On the film’s treatment of teen death, she argued that the movie does not romanticize suicide: “I don’t think we make that stuff look romantic at all. We make it look sad.” She also said that the film is “obviously exaggerated, but I think it rings true,” a point she tied to the way adolescents experience events as more intense than adults remember them.
Her later view is stated in a 2009 Interview conversation, where she said of the film: “I mean, it is very ’80s, but I think it totally holds up.” In the same conversation she recalled reading the script before it circulated widely, calling director Michael Lehmann, and wanting to be in the film even without a large fee. Her 2009 comments are the closest thing to a retrospective verdict from Ryder herself, and they are measured: she thinks the movie still works, while acknowledging it is a product of its decade.

Why the film was called a flop
The “flop” label is a commercial description, and it is the part of the headline that has the strongest support. Ryder said in 2009 that the film did not make much money when it was released. She also said she felt many people had seen it and that some had been offended by it, which points to a gap between how it performed at the box office and how it was received in conversation.
Coverage at the time also reflected a real tension. The 1989 Los Angeles Times profile described Heathers as a fiendish black comedy about high-school cliques and teen suicide, and noted that its flip satire had drawn outrage from critics. It also raised a concern that young viewers might not get the joke. That is the reason the film was controversial on release, and it is also why its box-office result and its critical reputation are hard to separate.

Why critics objected, and Ryder’s answer
The central objection was that the film treated suicide as a punchline. Ryder’s response was not that the film was harmless, but that its satire was aimed at the glamour of cruelty and the adults who failed to notice it. She argued that the film renders the deaths as sad. Whether a viewer accepts that reading depends on how they take the film’s tone, and the contemporary reviews were not unanimous on that point.
It is worth separating two claims here. Ryder defended the film’s intent, which she has consistently done. The question of whether the film succeeded in that intent is a separate judgment, and it is one readers can make for themselves by watching the film in context.

How the reputation changed
By July 2014, Entertainment Tonight described Heathers as a cult classic and covered its planned musical adaptation. The same article recalled Ryder saying her agent had begged her not to take the role, warning it could damage her career. That anecdote is useful for understanding the film’s standing, but it is a retrospective account and does not show that the film was regarded as a future classic when it opened.
The useful distinction is between two timelines. The commercial timeline is that the film underperformed at release. The reputational timeline is that it accumulated a cult following and became a reference point for later films and stage work. Ryder’s comments connect the two, but the evidence does not show that the later reputation was inevitable or widely shared at the time.

Reading the money figures
Two numbers circulate in coverage of the film’s earnings. They measure different things and should not be combined.
| Figure | Source and date | What it measures | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1.1 million | Yahoo Entertainment, 2014 (secondary report) | Presented as the film’s total gross | The territory, time period and accounting basis are not stated in the source, and the figure has not been checked against primary box-office records |
| “Like a couple million dollars” | Winona Ryder, Interview, 2009 | Her recollection of what the film made | A rough personal estimate, not an audited statistic |
Both figures are consistent with a film that did not make a large return on release, but neither is precise enough to settle how much it earned. Treat the $1.1 million figure as a secondary report and Ryder’s number as memory.

What readers should take from it
If you are looking for a quotation that says Ryder always believed Heathers was a masterpiece, the available interviews do not contain one. If you are looking for an accurate account of her view, the closest documented statements are that she wanted the part badly, defended the film’s satire when it was attacked, and said in 2009 that it still holds up. The film’s commercial disappointment and its later cult status are both supported by reporting, though the box-office numbers are less certain than the reception story.
Ryder’s own words are the most reliable guide here, and they describe a film she believed in more than a film she predicted would succeed.

- Interview, 2009: “I mean, it is very ’80s, but I think it totally holds up.”
The producer Denise Di Novi has also been reported describing the script as a masterpiece. That is a separate attribution and should not be credited to Ryder.
