The most compelling encounters range from Wolverine’s chaotic debut in a Wendigo story to later rematches and a mission that forces the rivals to work toward the same goal. Here are the key stories, with direct fights distinguished from conflicts involving a third opponent.
How to read their battles
“Most brutal” is a judgment, not an official Marvel ranking. These stories are worth comparing by how directly Logan and Hulk clash, what is at stake, how intense the conflict is, and whether it changes their relationship. Marvel’s published synopses establish broad premises, but they do not support a blow-by-blow ranking or a definitive winner for every encounter.
The matchup is built around a sharp contrast: Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton and claws against Hulk’s extraordinary strength. Marvel itself frames the question in its Wolverine character guide: “Which is stronger-adamantium… or the Hulk?!” That is a dramatic premise, not a verdict.
Incredible Hulk #180–182: Wolverine’s debut in a three-way fight
The clash begins in #181
Wolverine first appeared in Incredible Hulk #181, published November 1, 1974. Marvel’s official issue page bills the debut as a clash with the Hulk. The encounter is famous, but it is not a self-contained duel with a clean winner.

Wendigo changes the shape of the story
The confrontation belongs to a larger story spanning Incredible Hulk #180–182. Marvel’s Wolverine history explains that Logan fights Hulk and then joins him against Wendigo. The story therefore becomes a shifting conflict among three powerful characters: rivalry gives way to a shared threat, rather than ending in a conclusive victory for either hero. Issue #182 continues the saga and follows the consequences of Hulk’s flight.
Marvel describes #180 as the start of a two-part saga and #181 as Wolverine’s first appearance and famous clash; the story’s larger arc is essential context. Marvel later released facsimile editions of #180 in 2020 and #181 in 2019, while the original #181 dates to 1974.

Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours: a rescue mission under pressure
The four-issue Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours (2003) gives the pair a different kind of test. Its premise sends Bruce Banner/Hulk and Wolverine into the Canadian wilderness, where they have six hours to rescue a woman and a boy from two drug dealers. Instead of making the matchup only a contest of force, the story puts their tempers alongside a shared objective and urgent human stakes.
Marvel’s trade paperback listing collects Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours #1–4 and Incredible Hulk #181. Marvel lists the paperback as published June 1, 2003, at 229 pages. The collection is useful for reading the later team-up story alongside the debut, but the two stories remain very different kinds of encounter.

The later rematch: a classic clash without a confirmed issue number
Marvel’s 2024 listing for Incredible Hulk Epic Collection: Ground Zero describes a classic rematch between Hulk and Wolverine. The volume collects Incredible Hulk #331–346, but the listing does not identify which issue contains the rematch. It is safer to refer to the volume than to assign the fight an unverified issue number.

Hulkverines: a related fight, not a two-person rematch
Hulkverines broadens the idea of the matchup by bringing in Weapon H. Marvel’s synopsis for Hulkverines #1 says Wolverine and Hulk come after Weapon H, a man with adamantium claws and gamma-juiced blood. That makes the story relevant to the rivalry’s themes—especially what happens when a character combines traits associated with both heroes—but it is a three-character conflict, not simply another Wolverine-versus-Hulk duel.

Marvel’s issue listing supplies the premise, but not a basis for ranking its violence against the direct clashes.
Which battle is the most brutal?
If “brutal” means most historically significant, the debut-era Wendigo story stands out: it introduced Wolverine and set him against Hulk before redirecting both toward a common enemy. If it means sustained pressure around a rescue, Six Hours is the clearest fit because the clock and endangered civilians shape its premise. The later rematch is a notable return, while Hulkverines is best treated as an adjacent variation on the rivalry rather than a direct duel.
